THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN
By Wayne Cousins
Friday, 6 November 2009
Wests Tigers players returned to Concord Oval today to begin preparations for the 2010 Telstra Premiership.

The NRL squad gathered for a series of tests and information sessions. It was also a chance for new signings Jason Cayless, Mitch Brown, Geoff Daniela, Mark Flanagan, Junior Moors, Arana Taumata and Tame Tupou to meet their new team-mates.

For lock Liam Fulton and utility Daniel Fitzhenry, it was a case of re-acquating themselves with some of their former team-mates.

Wests Tigers Football Operations Manager Alan Mair said it was pleasing to see the players back in the new state of the art gymnasium designed by High Performance Manager Steve Folkes.

“The players underwent endurance, strength and skin folds tests,’’ Mair said.

“They all came back with satisfactory results. Our new players really applied themselves well. The players will start full-time training next week under Assistant Coach Peter Gentle and Steve Folkes.”

Wests Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys said one of the top priorities for 2010 was to improve the depth of the NRL squad.

“To this end, we expect to have a full-time squad of 34 players in 2010 along with six additional players who will train full-time over the off-season,’’ Humphreys said.

“If you think about our squad as 40 players, 11 of that squad played in the successful U20s side in 2009\. It is great to see so many of our young players earning places in the top squad.”

Any room left for Lote or Jeff Lima???

Well, they said a squad of 34.

This squad is only 32 plus the six extras.

So that may well mean that two players are to be added…....Tuqiri and Lima...........

Would they make it this obvious??

Florimo had potential but was very inconsistent. He's not a hooker, more of a half. He was much more effective playing 7 in the opening rounds and at 6 when Lui was in FG. Corby took every chance he had and proved he's got some talent. Interesting they chose Corby over Carr though.

There's definitely some talent in that squad and improved depth in positions where the Tigers need it most.

Guess that means Hanbury and Payne are on there way then.

Florimo is a half not a hooker, Corby is a hooker so guess thats why he is preferenced over Florimo

I Like this bit…still room for Lortay and Lima + 2 more........

What a master stroke from Sheens getting Folkes in while he is away.... hey Bug.....A First Grage Coach with a proven record to be there to commence pre season training....even took Royce with him....Sheens may do some dumd things but he isn't stupid.....

Aaron Woods, Andrew Fifita, Jason Schirnack, Junior Roqica, Matt Hyland, Nu Akeripa,Robert Lui, Simon Dwyer, Willie Mataka, Rhys Curran,Josh Davis,Chris Corby, Rhys Pritchard, Jake Mullaney and David Fifita.......Great to see so many Under 20's and State Cup youngsters being retained....Wests and Balmain State Cup teams will have strong teams next year....No Gower, Farlow, Hanbury or Payne........Hmmm

Bring on 2010.......can't wait.......

Oh dear where's Gower? I can only assume he'll be playing first grade in other colours next year.

Manly :frowning:

This time last year people were thinking that 2009 would be a year that:

- Moltzen would spend in the reserve grade
- slow Tuiaki would be challenged by juniors
- Lawrence and Marshall would be the halves
- who the hell was Blake Ayshford???

Sheens sure does keep a lot of secrets. Up until round 1 this year we were all expecting Macca or Mighty Mouse to be the number 1, yet Moltzen stepped in and he turned out to be the answer to our halfback problems. Who would have guessed that?

My point is that the list above says nothing except for the following: expect the unexpected!

the squad looks like a good blend of youth and experience.
who knows how its all going to turn out.
to be honest should aim for nothing lower than top 4 spot.

I think Lote is pretty much a done deal - so he would be #39.

Leaves one spot open hopefully Lima - i think Storm are waiting on a decision from Dallas Johnston about going to France first - hopefully they get this sorted and Johnston stays so Lima joins us after he comes back from Four Nations. Not that i really care but i think Storm would miss Johnston heaps he does a lot of work for them and may be as big a loss as if they were to lose on of their big names Snith, Slater, Cronk, Inglis. Hopefully Bellamy realises this and they push to keep him so Jeff returns to WT.

Interesting to see Junior Roqica there. I'm guessing all has been forgiven for his missed training episode which kept him out of the 20s finals run (which only hurt them btw, would have loved him in the centers). Like Woods he can play 20s for 2 more seasons, so I assume this is mainly a look to the future. Either way I'm glad to see him back in the fold.

Could you blame a player for leaving when he is offered a contract which is basically "We won't pay you anything but match payments" after his skill leads a team to a Grand Final and takes out player of the year.

Only big Al gets the call up despite several others being promised a shot at Grade by coach Sheens for several years now.

People wonder why I dislike the NYC competition. This is why. The retention system is all arse about.

Finally I would love to hear why Corby is retained yet one of the most dangerous hookers on a field in Sioeli Makaui is not.

Oh well thats my venting over.

I thought Gower should have seen NRL before Schirnack did,now he's gone completely. Why didn't we give him the money we gave Junior Moors?

No Skando, he played well enough last year to go around again.
Anyone know if he is playing for magpies again? could be a chance of getting a call up like he did this year if injuries don't go our way.

Hope Skando does go round again for Wests…they where on fire with him on board early in the season.....no surprise Wests slide co-insided with Skando's call up to first grade.........

He would be great for the young forwards in the team........
