Do we have Depth

Reading all reports from all grades there seems to be a view that in fact we don't have any real depth in the club that could be used quickly.I was under the impression that depth wasn't an issue but this seems not to be the case. So why has this happened the fact we don't seem to have any size is an issue ..but reading reports the lower grades seem very limited with prospects we have a couple of injurys with forwrds and no one to promote to first grade standard ..I find this a bit worrying.

what do you expect when you put all your money into a few players.

Benji is probably absorbing 600k at least, obviously some would go out as 3rd party sponsorship.
Robbie maybe 450-500k
Ellis at least 300k
Tuqiri at least 300k (for a winger!!)
Galloway would have got upgraded with origin and aust reps last year
Heighingon maybe 300k
Blair 500k
Lawrence was upgraded
Ayshford was too

Thats 9 players taking up about 3 quaters of our cap. You cant then come up with 16 other players that are decent and pay them peanuts.

As much as i dislike Gould, the other day he was on the money when he said, the salary cap is a science and you need to manage it properly.

It is a science and the people looking after our cap are anything but scientists.
Other clubs have moved forward and employed the right people to manage this thing, we just hope for the best.

We have more depth than any side. Last yr we used 33(?) players and still finish in the top 4\. We have a team of internationals… Both the Kiwi caprain and vc... two of NSW most exciting propects in Lawry and Woods. The two best back rowers in the game in Blair n Ellis. the best player in the game in Benji. Ohhh lets not forget one of the best hookers.

No lets look at depth.

We have one of the if not the most hyped up upcomming halves in Miller. Solid forward fringe players in BMM and Moors.

If any other club had the injuries we had... theyd be crippled...

Anyone thinking the clyb has done a poor job in managing and putting together this squad needs to pull their head out.

We have good depth but some of the depth players Sheens is afraid to use.

Exactly, look at Moors as an example.

Ignored for two years finally given a go and he has been good.

Yet playing other players out of position instead of giving him a chance was the order of the day.

We do have some depth, but its attitude not injuries that have been our problem the last 3 weeks.

Whenever i look at a team at the start of the year, I always think, how will they go if you take out 2 forwards, 2 backs and one of the spine? The answer to that question is usually a good rule of thumb for how the team will go. Teams that dont have injuries to star players will do better than the pack and teams that have critical injuries to star players will struggle.

Like most people, i think we're light on experience and depth in the front row, but the more games the young guys get at the start of the year, the better they'll be when it counts later in the year if we have a few big units injured.

depth is a great thing until you have to use it.

yep no dpeth in forwards we let go of players like Gibbs and Fifita because of that… ohh wait hang on where about to sign Mason because we are concerned about our forward depth!! Now now why didn't they think of this last year??? wasn't the cap suppose to be the reason? someone just own up and say they didn't want them instead of tells lies and blaming the cap

You need to remember that alot of those figures are made up by 3rd party payments and thus do not contribute to the cap.

There is no way that Blairs 500K is made up completly of Cap, same with Benji and the rest that you have quoted.

The science is splitting the payments with 3rd party deals which we as punters have no idea on what parts of their reported deals are made up of cap and 3rd party deals.

there is a limit on how much can be "cap free" 3rd party stuff. I wouldnt be surprised in benji absorbs most of that threshold

Yeah Mason would come at about 1/3 of Gibbs price and about 1/4 of what the gummies are paying the Hickey clone.

The maths is pretty simple

Galloway has also missed 2/3 weeks so far, we could declare him injury prone and move him on as well? Either way Gibbs would have cost more than mason, and I think mason is a poor choice as he is an out of form backrower, and has never been good at prop. It's surprising people critisize wanting to move Blair to prop, when he played numerous games for the storm and New Zealand at prop, yet want mason to solve the issue when he has been a backrower for majority of his career and done nothing for 2 years.

The club unfortunately didn't plan ahead, and I don't think any suitable additions exist (unless there is a prop in reserve grade somewhere), so we just need to push on and hope groat and woods learn how to tackle or rotate the squad till we find something that works. Hopefully we are lucky with injuries from here on in and our depth won't be as tested.

Roomers of WT wanting to sign Mason are way off the mark, then… 😕

I think our depth is pretty good. It looks bad at the moment particularly in the forwards because the second tier upcoming players are also out of form. With Ellis and Galloway out injured Sheens had every right to expect Groat and Woods to step it up a notch after their form late 2011\. They have just been found out to be too green for a leading forward role. They still need a forward leader out on the park with them. I'll probably get shot down here by I think Blair has been pretty good. He's been running at angles with speed. He's new to the club and new to the playing style. I think him and Ellis on the park at the same time with a couple of games under their belt will be a formidable back row. Heighington has yet to do much, but we know he is more than capable. I thought he might have been the one to show the way. Through injury, some players inability to stand up due to poor form at the moment and our young forwards still too green to lead, we are struggling at the moment. That will change. The depth is there. I think we need to remember it's not a bottomless pit. At strength we have Galloway, Ellis, Heighington, Blair, Groat, BMM, Moors, etc.
