Dodging the Benji Bullet

I really hope he comes back to nrl! Not at the tigers tho. I'd love to see how he would make a return and it would be awesome to watch how he plays from the other side of fence. I'm happy he left but I still wish him well.

Benji was always going to struggle in the RU code. Union flyhalves have almost by definition, had a brilliant short kicking game, and these days, need to be structured in their play. Unfortunately, Benji doesn;t have the first and can't fulfill the second.
The only place for him I believe would be the English Super League. I reckon he'd go very well there where the intensity isn't so high week by week.
Whatever he decides, I wish him well.

the spine of slater, cronk, smith and benji would surely be the best ever at club level

What about Slater, Inglis, Cronk and Smith? with folau chiming in too.

but i guess it's hard to count that since it was cheating

im a Storm man and we have no real 5/8 so he wouldnt look bad in our team….on a low budget obviously.
Our defence is horrible this year and that would be my only concern.

Hampton?

Hampton is a long term project. Hes also a FB turned 5/8

Theres every chance Bellamy could revive Benjis career. Storm usually play a strict, structure game but its not really working this year. The one time we looked half decent was when we had to play ad lib in the game vs Dragons…..who else can do that better than Benji could....he might just be able to spark something.
As for defence, we can just stick him in a corner somewhere and hope our 12 are good enough.

Benji has lost confidence and has slowed down a bit. He is scared and injury prone, all qualities not conducive to an up and coming player. His playing days are over. He should look to a career in media which will suit him. He could be a nice person, but his second half may not go the way he wants.Eversince he got married, it was all downhill, not to say that was the blame, but factors which could have affected his performanence.

Truth is,Benji gave his best years to WT,& after countless knee ops he lost his main asset..speed,,& after the same no of shoulder ops he also lost his appetite for collision.
This all happened a couple of years ago,but his hubris plus a misguided manager didnt see it.Maybe still dont.
Apperently there were a dozen kids at Auckland Blues who cld run rings around Benji at training-no surprise.
He has a poor kicking game, inadequate passing game,& is unable to process risk vs reward,so will always take the high risk headline grabber regardless of the consequences
So sadly he's washed up as a player in either code in any postion,& if he gets another gig its not going to end well unfortunately.
Appreciate the fact that we got his best,& be even more appreciative that we didnt pay $750kpa for more of the same, plus the distraction that goes with it.
Biggest bullet ever dodged!

I can't see Bellamy and Benji mixing

Bellamy wants percentages and playing smart options

Benji is like the Anti Christ of what Bellamy wants

And from the two games I have seen ,Ben Roberts has gone OK

And if the Storm aren't prepared to give Ben Hampton a fair go we should jump all over him

Superstar in the making imo

…And this is one of the reasons I quite enjoyed him not being here. Aside from Tedesco's contract situation (which isn't an unusual thing to be reported in the media,) the media coverage of Wests has been minimal, save the stories on our resurgent form.

Benji will bring back the media circus, and we don't need that.

Greg Alexander said earlier tonight that the doggies might be interested in him as a fullback.

Plenty of people have suggested over the years that fullback may be his best position. What many don't realise is that you need an enormous level of fitness to play fullback, and Benji is definitely short of a run at the moment.. Would take a good 4-6 weeks to get him match fit, and at this stage of the season may not be worth the punt.

This has been my prediction also.

Its where he fits in the modern game.

Does anyone really see Benji putting himself on the line under a high ball or doing the same being the last man in defence

Or diving at the feet of an attacking player when defusing a grubber kick when you know your gonna get hurt

He will get taken apart as a fullback in the NRL

Problem is Benji just wants to play football as Benji wants , not what the team or the coach wants or needs

He has lost two coaches faith in him within 6 months , not a good sign

I dont see Kurtis Rowe doing that either.

I would take Benji back to play one until Teddy returns. He cant defend any worse than Rowe and he will be hungry as hell. This wont happen though, and its probably a good thing. But if he laced up a boot on sunday at Fullback instead of Rowe i would have $1000 on us 13+

Sorry KS but got to disagree

What would Benji learn if we resigned him even if it was for 80 k a season??

At least we know what we are going to get from Rowe over the next few weeks

The expectations people have for this bloke are unbelievable to be honest

Like Anasta he is filling a role until other things happen and we are also finding whether this bloke is up to NRL standard and whether we should persevere with him in the future

We are 2 from 2 with him and he has made two glaring errors He is safe under the high ball ,done ok positionally

What else do you want 200 metres , 30 bone crushing tackles ,8 line breaks , 3 try assists

Rowe wants to do the best for the club that he can , Benji is just about parading himself like a peacock and trying to find a new club while he is at it

Wests Tigers statement regarding Benji Marshall

Wed 23rd April, 03:45PM

Wests Tigers CEO Grant Mayer has today reconfirmed with the NRL that the Club strongly supports Benji Marshall’s return to the competition.

“Benji is a Club stalwart who will always be part of our history,” Mayer said. “Unfortunately we are not in a position to offer him anything at the Wests Tigers, as he made a decision last year and we have had to move forward.

“We believe that the NRL is stronger with Benji Marshall and we will not stand in his way from returning to the competition.

“Benji will always hold a special place in our heart and we believe he would be a great addition to any Club in the future,” he said.

On finalising a playing agreement with a new team, Wests Tigers will have a separate discussion with that Club on a set of terms that will be commercial in confidence.

Marshall played 201 games for the Wests Tigers before joining Super Rugby team Auckland Blues at the completion of the 2013 season.

Sorry Alex , just making a point

Nothing is wrong with Blake and Mitchell , but I can't understand why ANY club in the NRL would risk their junior talent to sign a 29 year old Marshall no matter who he was playing with talent wise

i really cant understand whether it's the media chasing benji or benji chasing the spotlight. things always seem more complicated with him for some reason… he always seems to be the centre of attention. not sure whether he wants it that way or it just happens somehow.
