Doug Lucas

Played 14 games for Wests in 1977 (prior to that he played 27 games for Newtown in 75-76 & 3 games off the bench for Easts in 74)!

That is all the info I can find on him mate!

was he a good player for Wests? can anyone give me any info on him please.

Warmly known as "Kojak" because of his bald head, the Kojak character being a TV detective of the day played by actor Telly Savallas.

Lucas was maybe a bit limited in terms of forward skills by today's standards, but WOW! he gave 110%, was fearless in taking the ball up, was always a workhorse and fitted the never-say-die courage and attitude of the hard-nosed Wests Magpies of the day.

A great memory of him and reflects the good times that seem so long ago….... (from a magpies perspective).

Remember him playing with his 'Kojak' look he played his footy hard and tough who relished in an 'enforcer' role.

Yeah he had the fair hair and bald too, very pale as well…..when I was a kid it was rumoured he has deaf and or dumb....funny - same thing for Don Rogers too.
Dougy from memory was an honest toiler, workhorse but limited in skills

looks like he had hair in '76\. I always remembered him as balled, 'kojak'

Pratten…Doug had hair.He just looked like he was bald because of the closely cropped haircut and being blonde as well.

I thought he was bald too !

Yes, he came to us from the Bluebags. No nonsense old school type player.Don't remember him doing anything great ….... just an honest toiler.

I remember Douggie Lucas from his Bluebag days. You're right about him being very fair, and with a very short haircut he did look bald. Douggie was very enthusiastic and never took a backward step - a bit like Bryce Gibbs running amok. As a consequence he was liable to give away silly penalties and was given 2 nicknames by the Henson Park Hillites: "Captain Rats" and "Scattered Aces"! I hasten to assure you all that both these names were bestowed affectionately and were in no way a reflection on his mental condition. It's just that he was likely to do the wrong thing at the wrong time. He became a Hill favourite and we were sorry to see him go. I also remember that he used to warm up on the sideline during Reserve Grade by doing curls, presses, and clean and jerks with a large weight set - they don't make 'em like Douggie anymore!
