Draft Revisited??

despite the desire to Americanise rugby league, rookie drafts don't work in our code because our high school and 'collegiate' systems aren't strong enough.

quite frankly, teams need to either fix the pathways in their own backyard, or adopt regions that aren't claimed currently. the NRL simply doesn't have the money to fund junior development, most of it is funded by leagues clubs.

thankfully most teams are either looking after their own and/or branching out. Easts have the Central Coast. Melbourne are finally building the Victorian pathways. Canterbury have shacked up with the Northern Tigers and Toowoomba. Redcliffe are tapping into Central Queensland. WT have gotten their act together in the South West.

the entire league is going to benefit from that. PNG is going to be a consistent stream in due course too, finally receiving the coaching and guidance they've lacked that will make them a domestic and international rugby league superpower. the entire league will benefit in the long term.

a draft for off contract players might be a good shout. will be a good way to evenly spread the talent around the league and also means the rich don't constantly get richer as we've been seeing.

Draft will only work if they also introduce a trade structure and clubs also have 1st right to extend to keep the drafted players.

With expansion clear focus it’s the only way to create an opportunity for clubs lower down in congested markets to have some success.

Besides that, Terry Hill & other players won a case against the draft making it unworkable. Hill was drafted by the Roosters but fought the case as he wanted to sign with.......wait for it....... Western Suburbs Magpies!
