Ellis dreading NRL farewell to Tigers

Gareth Ellis says he'll leave Wests Tigers at the end of this year with a heavy heart and hopefully wearing a NRL premiership ring.

The England international arrived at the Tigers from Leeds with a big reputation in 2009 and has exceeded expectations.

His consistent performances won him the Tigers player of the year award three times in as many seasons, cementing his spot as one of the finest back-rowers in the world.

The 31-year-old returns to the UK at the end of the year where he'll link up with Super League side Hull FC, who are coached by Tim Sheens' former assistant at the Tigers, Peter Gentle.

And although he has no regrets about his decision to move back to Yorkshire, Ellis wants a premiership to take back with him.

"That would be the dream ending and the reality is we have the team to do it," Ellis told AAP.

"But at the end of the day, I am not going to let that justify whether I have enjoyed my experience here or not.

"I've loved every minute of it. Not just the football side of things - living here has been fantastic."

Ellis admits he was unsure if he would last in the NRL when he first arrived, but is now dreading the day he has to say farewell to his teammates.

"I had a lot of apprehension about being an Englishman coming out here and playing in the NRL," he said.

"But now I am just another player, one of the boys and part of the club."

Ellis and former English greats Ellery Hanley and Gary Schofield were recognised by the Tigers last week at a dinner to commemorate their contribution to the club.

And Ellis said being mentioned in the same breath as Hanley and Schofield, who played for Balmain in the 1980s, was a huge thrill.

"I am very proud to be associated with that, and very honoured to be in the same company as Gary and Ellery - two greats of the game," he said.

Ellis nominates Luke Lewis as one of the toughest players he has faced in the NRL and said he'd love to see the NSW and Australian star take his place in 2013.

Lewis has been granted an early release from the final two years of his Penrith contract to seek a new challenge and Ellis said he'd be a perfect fit for the Tigers.

"He would be a great acquisition for the club, regardless of who is coming and going," Ellis said.

"He is an absolutely brilliant player and, by all accounts, a great bloke off the field as well. He's the full package."

Lewis' manager Greg Willett was in hospital coming out of minor surgery when contacted by AAP and unable to comment on his client's future plans.

If Gareth doesnt hurry up and get back on the field, then he'll only have less than 8 weeks to wait until his NRL career is over. We are all praying it ends up being 3 months but ….

Without trying to flare up another us versus them arguments - why is it that every time Hanley and Schofield are mentioned it is that played for Balmain - it would show a closer link to the Wests Tigers if it was correctly reported that they both played for Balmain and Wests.

Good Point, dp and well picked up. They most certainly did play for both clubs, but the media only wants to acknowledge one. As far as they're concerned the Wests Tigers are Balmain, just with a different name.

maybe they both played for balmain first and they cant get round the fact they played for both , its poor excuse but you are talking about reporters

I don't buy into the us vs them thing but I do agree with this post. Mainly because it actually makes their contribution even more meaningful!! Obviously a quick write-up, no research.

My point exactly and although neither spent the same amount of time with Wests ( Schofield only played 9 or 10 games ) it does show greater ties to WT

And back on topic it will be sad to see Gareth go - what a player and a man.

best second-rower i've seen… he'll sorely be missed and i wish him well in ESL as well as any other future endeavours.

Because I think the honor they got recently was from Balmain not Western Suburbs.
Correct me if i'm wrong.

Your probably right - but you can't have your cake and eat it too - if it was a Balmain dinner why did they recognise Ellis's contribution to the club.

Gareth don't be sad that you are leaving wests-tigers to return home.

be glad of the time you have spent here.

You have achieved alot, including many friends, at wests-tigers and won the respect of alot of footy fans.

Paul Sironen was something special. I remember when the Tigers were pretty poor and he would kill them.

I think Sirro and Ellis are pretty similar players. Ellis probably has a bit more skill in attack but maybe a bit less pure grunt. Defensively I think they are pretty close. Great players.

While Gareth hasn't had much of an impact this year I'm sure that many of our Supporters appreciate his whole hearted efforts over the previous 3 seasons, wish we had gotten him sooner and he may have had that elusive NRL Premiership medal in his pocket already.
I thought I remembered an interview earlier this season where Gareth expressed his desire to finish his career at his Junior club in the Castleford Tigers, pity then he changed his mind to go where the money is, although if he wanted more of a Wests Tigers connection he chose the wrong Hull club, Hull KR is where all the old WT tiges are.
