Ellis under scrutiny as two more Rabbits fall
CHRIS BARRETT
August 9, 2010

THE NRL match review committee will today scrutinise a suspected ''chicken wing'' tackle by Wests Tigers second-rower Gareth Ellis on John Sutton that has ended the South Sydney five-eighth's season with a dislocated shoulder.

Sutton left ANZ Stadium in agony after the incident, which occurred in the first period of extra time of the clash on Saturday night.

Rabbitohs debutant Dylan Farrell scored as the seconds ticked down to complete a treble of tries and a stunning come-from-behind Souths victory 34-30\. However, their jubilation was soured by confirmation yesterday that Sutton and impressive lock Ben Lowe are out for the remainder of the season, adding to an injury crisis that has claimed half of John Lang's first-grade squad.

Sutton said he would have surgery on his right shoulder as early as today despite not having yet had an MRI scan on the injury. ''I'm out for the season, I'd say. I probably need an operation,'' Sutton said. ''It's the same shoulder I injured in 2007 so I know the situation.

''I'm disappointed I got injured but it was a great win for the boys. The boys who stepped in [on Saturday night] did well so there is no reason why we can't keep that going.''

Of the tackle by Ellis, in which the injury occurred, Sutton said: ''I was falling back and he lifted my arm, and [the shoulder] just popped out. I haven't seen the footage so I can't really say much. I just know he lifted my arm.''

Lang was also prepared to give Ellis the benefit of the doubt. ''It looked like he grabbed him by the arm and pulled it up … whether that was intentional or just happened as part of making the tackle, I'm not sure,'' the Souths coach said. ''If it was a bloke who had a record for doing that sort of thing, I think you could make a case that it was intentional but I think it was probably accidental.''

Ellis was not reported for the tackle and a penalty was not awarded to the Rabbitohs. Souths winger Nathan Merritt did go on report earlier for a high shot on Tigers centre Chris Lawrence, who was knocked out by the resulting contact with the ground.

Lang has no concerns his personnel could be further limited by suspension. ''There is absolutely no evidence that he hit up in the head,'' he said. ''[Lawrence] hit his head on the ground. I don't think [Merritt] has anything to worry about.''

Ellis's tackle was a perfect example of where the rules in the ruck and tackle area are causing a large grey area and risking injury.

The held calls are later and later in coming and as such the wrestle is about securing the ball rather than completing the tackle that close to the line because a guys momentum can cease but if he is wriglling to try and get an offload there is no held call

I just hope they don't cite him over it. He was one of the Tigers best against Souths and we can ill afford to lose him against the Panthers.

Totally agree Willow. He's one of our best every week and we need him in the side.

So because the bloke is one of your favourite players, that makes him innocent does it?? He should get the same treatment Cameron Smith got..

Is it safe to say you think Ellis is guilty of a chicken wing tackle CT? I never said he was innocent, personally I didn't see anything wrong with the tackle and even John Lang reckons it was accidental.

About as accidental as Merrit's head high on Rowdy or the spear tackle on Big Red…
You'd be screaming blue murder if Marshall had his shoulder ripped out of his socket by a Bunnies player..
Ellis should get 6-8 weeks for that tackle if the NRL want to be fair dinkum on eradicating these sort of tackles out of the game..

I know I'm relatively new here and I'm not sure if I'm allowed to ask this but is crouching_tiger seriously playing with a full deck? First he says no Fitzy no finals and now he wants Ellis suspended? I don't get his posts.

Considering Burgess got a Grade 2 for the worst grapple tackle I have seen than I doubt that.

But as usual your brailer appears packed with the ripe bait CT

What's there to get??
Ever since the Fitz has been out, WT have been on the slide down the premiership ladder. No coincidence is it??
And yes i do want Ellis suspended for his chicken wing tackle, just as i would want any player in the NRL suspended for the same offence regardless of which team they play for.

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

In addition to the offending poster, the noun troll can also refer to the provocative message itself, as in "that was an excellent troll you posted". While the term troll and its associated action trolling are primarily associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels highly subjective, with trolling being used to describe intentionally provocative actions outside of an online context.

Hope that helps.

Just watched it again, in real-time speed and slow-mo and you're right mate. Ellis wrapped the ball well, one of the few Tigers who knows how to.

No injury, no case to answer. It's only because he's injured, which is the same shoulder he's already hurt before.
By the look of the tackle, it wasn't a chicken wing as that is where you pull the arm away from the body. Not what ellis did.

Yes dude. It IS a coincidence.

If you aren't being a troll and really do think that Fitzhenry is even close to the best 30 players we have, you need to see a therapist to get over your Fitzhenry infatuation.

Was a good tackle and Sutton knocked the ball on, we should have got the ball, was a major referee blunder.

I wish Sheens come out and send that Merritt hit Lawrence high and should have been sent off. Lang uses the media to his advantage where as Sheens doesn't.

Yeah lets give Ellis 8 weeks but forget Merrits high shot which knocked a player out.

Keep it up and you will be on the judiciary panel soon mate. Might even get a go at NSW selection too…

I think someone wasn't allowed to join the Gareth Army..

Gareth Army > Fitzy World Order (FWO)

You know it makes sense.
