Essendon Saga

The AFL and ASADA are a joke really

We have a club that has been caught out red handed

Jobe Watson admits to using a banned substance

And the AFL is doing deals with these people

So does it work like this "well you can charge me for that , but not for this "

If you had respect for the AFL , it has to be gone now

Well , lets hope if the NRL gets to this stage with Cronulla ,Manly or the Knights that they wield an iron stick and put the players out who have done wrong

At least we will earn some respect for how we are trying to stop the drug cheats in our game

Lets hope everyone involved whether it be Gallen .Watmough or any other big names get the same treatment as a no name NYC player

If you do the crime you do the time

I was surprised the AFL seemed to take such a lenient stance.

All they want is to have this done and dusted before the AFL finals series

Taking the premiership points is a soft penalty , they would of been knocked out first week anyway

Take some highly fancied draft choices off them for the next five seasons and see what they think of that

that's a good thing isn't it?

what if the Sharkies make the grand final and then it comes out they're all doped up?

Their CEO has done back room deals for years.

Just look at Blacktown Council. Duped into building the GWS Gronks training facility and now selling off constituents parkland to make up for the shortfall that the AFL left by not playing games there

Im imagining the sharks have been watching this whole Essendon thing very closely and worriedly.

The same as what happened to Melbourne a few years ago - they lose the premiership and it goes to no team at all.

Breaking News

The AFL looks set to confirm Essendon are out of this year's finals as part of their punishment over the supplements saga.

Bombers assistant coach Mark Thompson emerged from AFL House late on Tuesday afternoon, saying he didn't believe the club would play finals this year, before returning inside.

Talks to agree on penalties over the AFL club's suspect 2012 supplements program have continued all day after discussions throughout Monday ended without a breakthrough.

Essendon, coach James Hird, club doctor Bruce Reid, assistant coach Thompson and Bombers football manager Danny Corcoran have all been charged with bringing the game into disrepute arising from the supplements program.

An announcement over at least the issue of Essendon's finals participation appears imminent, with speculation rife the Bombers won't be playing in September despite locking up a top eight spot several weeks ago.

But there is no firm word yet on the fate of those charged, as well as any possible fines or loss of draft picks for Essendon.

The Herald Sun website is reporting Essendon are officially out of the finals, and that Corcoran has been suspended for four months as part of a deal hammered out by the AFL.

The AFL is yet to confirm this, though speculation is mounting that confirmation could happen later on Tuesday night.

Heraldsun.com.au also reports no decision has been reached on the fate of Hird, Reid and Thompson.

The spectre of Essendon being kicked out of finals or stripped of premiership points has been looming for several weeks.

The Bombers have been under investigation by ASADA and the AFL since February over the club's supplements program.

An interim report was presented to the AFL earlier this month, with sanctions set to be based on that while the ASADA investigation remains ongoing.

Acting on the report, the AFL charged Essendon, Hird, Reid, Corcoran and Thompson with offences relating to conduct unbecoming and bringing the game into disrepute.

Hird has filed a separate Supreme Court writ against the AFL that remains alive

Its a good thing if they are going through the process properly ,doesn't sound like they are trying too hard if they are offering back room deals and trading off on charges

What about Manly and Newcastle as well ??

I can't believe that James Hird is being made to appear a hero in all of this and is rewarded with a 2 year contract at the end

What the parent of one of the Essendon players said is true , he had no duty of care for the club or the players and was only worried about his own arse

I bet he is still getting paid for the 2014 season

I can. The AFL answers to no one but itself. They wouldn't dare ruin the image of one of their games great that badly and bring the whole code into disrepute. Remember they're trying to tell mums and dads in NSW and QLD that they're game is safe.

So glad i can look at an AFL/soccer/cricket thread on a league site without any gronks commenting on how stupid the sport is, a rarity on the interwebs. Love this website!

i dont think he is ht - unless i misread or miss heard something - and with that, i doubt essendon would risk paying him… directly.

Yeah I think I heard the AFL stipulate that Hird can't be paid by essendon for the duration of the ban.

That doesn't mean a well meaning sponsor couldn't give him a gig I guess

I don't think his family will starve either way

I think it will be more a case of an upgraded pay for those 2 further seasons. As you suggest I don't think he'll be in the soup kitchen lines
