Ex-Tiger Gower earns stripes in Dragons' lair
Josh Rakic - SMH
April 10, 2011

WHILE David Gower was doing his best to avoid 240 volts to the chest, the Balmain Tigers forward and apprentice electrician could only watch on and smile as his best friends and childhood teammates went on to claim the 2005 NRL premiership.

Gower rose through the junior ranks with future internationals Robbie Farah and Bronson Harrison, who starred in the Tigers' march to their maiden title, but six years later he is a qualified sparkie and is now finally getting a chance to make his mark on the NRL. However, it's with the Dragons, courtesy of one Wayne Bennett.

"I was part of Jersey Flegg at Balmain with Robbie Farah, Bronson Harrison and those sort of boys," the 25-year-old told The Sun-Herald. "I actually played Harold Matthews, SG Ball and Flegg with them and then once they hit 18-19 they started playing first grade. I was a couple years younger and went into Premier League. They went on a lot earlier than I did, and I'm happy for them. I'm hopeful I can accomplish half the things all those boys have, because they've gone on to be unreal.

"I'm still mates with the boys and we chat when we get a chance. I was always full-time at the Tigers up until the pre-season ended in February and then I'd have to go back to work as a sparkie and work both.

"I've been lucky enough now to go full-time, which I'm pretty happy with. Working full-time and then training full-time takes it out of you. They're long days. I was getting up at 5.30am, working until 3.30pm and going straight to training and getting home at 8pm."

As a result of his gruelling schedule, Gower was never able to build up muscle and when he made his debut for Wests Tigers in 2009, against the Bulldogs, he tipped the scales at only 93 kilograms. But it'll be a different David Gower the Bulldogs face this afternoon – a matured, 102kg machine, all muscle, might and power.

"Wayne's already had a massive effect on my game – it's hard to describe how much," said the modest prop, who will play his third game for the Dragons today. "People always ask what's the difference between the two clubs and well, Wayne cares about the full squad. He wants a strong 30-32 players.

"We have a dietitian and putting weight on has been my biggest problem in the past. Working all day and training at night, I'd burn so much of it. Now I've managed to put on six-seven kilos. They just seem to care about the whole squad at the Dragons, which is something I hadn't had before.

"Having to work and play reserve grade, you're not really top of priorities. To be in a joint where they really want you to get to the weight they want you at, strong and fast – it's certainly paid off so far.

"The weight has made a lot of difference. Not just in terms of power, but I'm stronger in the gym and it's given me a lot more confidence. And when you're working physically as a sparkie, you're burning energy and calories and I wasn't able to eat enough. Now I can eat five times a day and my diet is spot-on. Being able to recover between sessions and not punch out eight hours has been helping a lot, too."

So as his former junior buddies Farah and Harrison, who is now with Canberra, embark on their ninth and eighth NRL seasons respectively, this former Salford prop will take to the NRL arena for only the fourth time. But he'll be carrying with him eight years of enthusiasm, passion, frustration, anger, experience, dedication and determination. The former sparkie is playing for a brighter future.

Good Luck to David, he deserves everything that comes his way at the Dragons.
I can never understand why he wasn't ever given a fair go by Sheens

I'm a tad annoyed at his choice of words re "caring for the whole squad"

The Tigers have had to prove their depth this season already, and without a decent amount of care for the entire squad, we'd be throwing half baked players on the field, and thats exactly what we HAVENT been doing.

cause there is only so many players that can get on the field at once.. just cause they have tallent doesnt mean we have to give them a go for the sakes of it.. there are other players in front of him with more potential

100% agreed!

From what I've seen of him at St. George this year and the fact that he lost his bench spot to Cronulla reject Adam Cuthbertson tells me I'm happy with Tim's decision to put others ahead of him. I rate Fifita, Woods, Dwyer and Murdoch Masilla way ahead of him.

Good luck to him. Bennett is BIG on the care factor and working with each and every player. Sheens could take a leaf out of his page.

He cares enough about his next big pay cheque to leave a year after signing him… I think you're being unfair on Sheens. Fact is our record in retaining our best players is exceptional since he came along and the team has arguably the best team spirit/culture in the NRL. Sheens deserves some credit for creating a climate where blokes like Farah/Marshall/Lawrence etc want to stay and guys like Blair want to come.

I agree that Sheens has a good ability to pick the right players to focus on.

The article did concern me though that we have an environment where Gower didn't have the opportunity to reach his potential. It doesn't take much effort to help our 2nd tier players with dietary needs and muscle gain, even if you don't see them as First Grade material. Who else isn't being helped to be the best they can be?

Fifita, Woods, Dwyer and BMM would have been around 16 or 17 when Gower made his first grade debut. Hardly a fair comparison. Hindsight maybe, but Gower won the State Cup MVP did he not? Yes, he did

This year… Maybe yeah!! But in the past?? I wouldn't have rated Galea or Payne ahead of him..
I would also have him over the Schirnack boys or Even Flanno last year.
And he could have easy did Cayless's Job in 3 games last year!!
Don't get me wrong, I'm a BIG FAN of all the afore mentioned players, But I really think Big Dave
has something special that we could have been using for a long time now... if not at Prop, Then 2nd row for sure.
But before anyone makes a call... Give him a year in a full time squad (Something he's never had...) Then make some noise...
Something tells me, There will be a lot of angry Tigers fans when this guy shows his stripes!!

It's one bloke's opinion. I've seen nothing else to indicate that this is the case and from what we've seen this year, the club has a long list of players who are capable to getting called up to first grade.

Schirnack was dropped from the full time squad and was in the same boat as Gower had been in until we got slapped in the injury department so early.

Unfortunatley our management of the NYC graduates has had a major influence on where our second tier cap is generally spent.

The people who know the facts of how Gower and others were treated know where he is coming from in his comments but that is just the way things have panned out for WT in the way we manage players. A decision was made, he made a decision to move on and he is better off because of it.

Oh and as for Cuthbo being a Sharks reject. Whilst he sucked at the Sharks he was good for the Eagles and he is better now again.

The situation that the Dragons find themselves in this year with non NRL required players being played in local A grade comps necesitates a rotation policy as well. Gower will see the NRL again this season. Bennet respects his talents and wants him to succeed

Can you expand on your comments about Gower and others not being treated well enough? Are you talking about chances to play NRL or access to training/coaches?

Talking about promises made to keep them from taking up other contracts that were renigged upon.

Access to equipment and suplements also but that could have been a simple ecconomic decision

Hopefully those matters are in history now and do not rear their heads again for future players

Thanks Smeg. As much as I sympathise with players affected, I guess you're always going to have players who are promised a chance at 1st grade and who don't get it. I think it comes down to the nature of the promise or what the parties take away from a "you're part of our plans" promise. Obviously I have no idea who said what to who in this particular case.
We've had a few players leave mid-contract for better offers so the club at least is willing to give players a chance to better their situation elsewhere. Apart from that we can only wish David the best of luck and hopefully Steve Price shares Bennett's high opinion.

Just face the facts, hes always going to be a fringe first grader otherwise he would have made the wests tigers first grade side by now, the fact that the ex-shark - cuthbertson has lost 10 kilograms and is in front of him now only justifies what he really is, i would like to wish him the best of luck, but the truth is you cant keep them all. We have some many young front rowers like woods, rociqa, begovich, fifita, groats, murdoch-massilla and co. plus gibbs, payten and galloway, and im sure i missed someone along the line as well
