A JUNIOR rugby league player warned on Facebook that he would be bashed during a match had his jaw shattered after he was punched and kicked in the head.

Police are now investigating the sickening incident, which occured during a game between two North Sydney junior league teams on June 3, and are reviewing social media messages as part of the case.

The boy, whose jaw was broken in two places, has been off school for a month and has lost more than 10kg from eating through a straw.

"The brawl was premeditated and was targeted towards my son deliberately through social media," his father said in a statement.

Five weeks after the incident at least one player accused of assault will finally face a judiciary hearing on Tuesday night.

The victim and his parents have agreed to tell the story on the condition he is not named for fear of repercussions.

The boy has nightmares and has slept with his mother since the attack. "I remember getting bashed and two of them running away laughing," he said. "I had no chance to try to protect myself."

A teenage player admitted punching the boy to Hornsby police on June 26, but denies kicking him.

Senior detective Ben Rigley says he has been frustrated by lack of support from Facebook administration.

"We were looking for evidence from before the game but Facebook don't cooperate with us as much as we'd like," Det Rigley said. "It can take up to 12 months to actually get what we're looking for."

Police have so far been unable to identify the second player who kicked the boy in the head.

"It would make a massive difference to the investigation if there was video footage available," Det Rigley said.

"I've just had differing versions. Boys look after their teammates and one team gives one version and the other team gives another."

Police have decided not to charge the teenager who admitted punching the boy, who will instead go before a youth conference as part of the Young Offenders Act.

No official from the rival club has contacted or apologised to the family although a player sent a text message, writing : "Sorry bra, disn't (sic) mean for s . . . to go the way it did hope your (sic) all g".

The incident occurred on June 3.

"He got hit twice then kicked in the head after he had slumped to the ground," said his father, who is also his son's team's trainer.

His son can't remember.

He purposely stayed out of a brawl involving about 20 players, 10 minutes from fulltime, because of the Facebook threats prior to the match.

The family are angry his case has not gone before a junior league tribunal.

"It's taken five friggin' weeks to get this case before a judiciary," his father said.

"We've been in touch with Wayne Pearce on the commission, Shane Mattiske, who's the acting CEO, the police and the junior clubs, yet still nothing's happened."

The boy's mother added: "This has just turned our lives upside down.

"My son has not stopped having nightmares and is sleeping with me at night.

"He cannot concentrate on anything without getting flashbacks."

His father was watching from the sidelines when the drama unfolded. "I still feel guilty that I didn't run out and help my son," he said.

The president of the rival club declined to comment on the matter.

The teenager has vowed to make a comeback from the injuries next year with the support of his parents.

this is not good.
maybe a suitable punishment for the offenders, is that they cannot return to playing footy until the person who was injured does.if he never returns, they can never play.

they also have to cover all medical expenses.

yes it maybe harsh, but would send a clear message that this type of incident will not be tolerated.

Harsh but fair tah…actually not really harsh, the game doesnt need kids like those.

Anyone know what clubs are involved?

Norths JRL?

I would say if the premeditation is proven that everyone who made the threats and was involved in the carrying out of those threats is done, life ban.

This game is for gladiators not thugs and cowards

x2\. Having been on the end of a broken jaw due to being jumped by half a dozen students at Airds High School playing Union back in the 90's, I can relate to this incident all too well.

Life Ban , and if the coaches or any trainer had any idea this was organised pre game , life ban for them too , they would have known about some of it , kids talk , and some coaches are thugs specially in junior footy , ive seen it when my son played , trainers calling from the side , thats the one , that one , we all know what they mean

"Police have decided not to charge the teenager who admitted punching the boy"

This is what annoys me. Who cares if he is young, everyone knows its wrong to punch someone else, it is assault.

I have no information or knowledge of the incident but my guess would be Berowra and Asquith. They're close to each other and the players normally know most of the players on the other team because 95% of them go to either Asquith BHS or St Leos. Well they did when I played anyway…

In any case there aren't many teams in the NSDJRL anyway - Berowra, Asquith, Pennant Hills, Brothers, Hills Hawks...
