Robbie Farah furious at Gorden Tallis over claims he said Mick Potter can't coach

A bitter feud has erupted between Wests Tigers captain Robbie Farah and Gorden Tallis over claims by the former great that Farah had told him Mick Potter "can't coach".

With Potter facing the sack after two years in charge of the Tigers, Farah and Tallis became embroiled in a heated text message exchange after Tallis aired the allegation on Triple M on Friday night and he went further on Sunday after being challenged during an interview with Farah's manager Sam Ayoub.

"Robbie Farah told me to my face when I was on Triple M last year on a Saturday show, he told me that Mick Potter can't coach," Tallis said. "I don't go on Chinese whispers, I go on what he told me."

Ayoub did not deny Farah may have made the comments, saying: "That was correct last year but his opinion has changed. That was 12 months ago."

Tallis, who had not previously revealed who told him Farah's opinion of Tallis, responded by saying: "Robbie is now telling me to get my facts right when the facts come out of his mouth. That's what he told me. So Robbie has now changed his mind. I said Robbie your silence [on Potter] is deafening. You are their best player, you are their captain, you are their most powerful player, get in behind your club".

Farah and Tallis again clashed after Sunday's match at ANZ Stadium when the Tigers skipper refused to be interviewed on the field at full-time, with witnesses saying he was so angry that teammate Aaron Woods had to intervene. Afterwards, Farah again denied making the comments about Potter and hit out at Tallis at the post-match press conference.

"I'm not happy about it and he knows I'm not happy about it," Farah said. "It's completely false. I don't have to sit here and justify myself and Mick's relationship. We've got a job to lead this club and we're doing the best we can. Some people out there need to go and get their facts straight before they want to run their mouth off."

Asked if he wanted Potter to remain as head coach, Farah shot back: "Mick's got the support of the whole playing group and will continue to have the support of the playing group. That's never been an issue. Mick knows that, the players know that and we've got on with business as we showed last week [against the Bulldogs]."

However, Farah admitted the constant speculation he was behind the push to oust Potter had affected his performance in the 28-12 loss to St George Illawarra at ANZ Stadium and he held a 20-minute meeting with Potter in a private room before kick-off. "It affected me but we have got to be stronger than that, me and Mick, as leaders and not show that it is affecting us," Farah said.

Potter said: "It was to do with the press and we had to cover that. It was affecting Robbie so I had to address it and I did that. I thought it was best to be done in private so I did that. Robbie, I thought, had a really good game and tried his ring out for the club and the team and he proved he is a leader of a group of men".

The speculation that Potter would be sacked after the game upset many Wests Tigers fans, who vented their anger at the club on radio and social media. Asked if the decision about Potter's future could have been handled better by the Tigers management, Farah said: "It hasn't been good for anyone".

However, he insisted the players had tried to stay out of the process and Ayoub said the Tigers skipper had told chief executive Grant Mayer six weeks ago he didn't want any involvement in the decision about the coach.

Ayoub said: "Robbie directly went in Grant Mayer's office five or six weeks ago when they started talking about a review and he said to Grant Mayer 'I have a responsibility at this club to help lead these young blokes through. All I want to do is concentrate on captaining the side, I don't want any say or input into what you do with the coach. Our job is to play and your job is to administer and make decisions about coaches so leave us out of it'."

Whosoever idea it was to consult the players on who they think should be the coach should be locked in a padded cell. What clowns. And on Farah, absolutely disgraceful from the club captain if true to throw the coach under the bus like that.

The review was never centred on the coach, but moreso about our structure and current practices.

And why is Tallis suddenly coming out now with such explosive claims? Nothing about this makes sense.

This all started because (allegedly) it was in his report that the players didnt back Potter. Releasing the report can fix this. Unless its true.

I agree with this … And if Potter gets to go around for another year ? I'm sure he's man enough to forgive & forget what farah has done !

Wouldnt Brian Smith have some inside info on this? His report would clear some things up.

I think we have more chance of seeing a dodo riding on the back of a Tasmanian Tiger on the Galapagos Islands playing with Charles Darwin than we do of seeing this full unedited report

I like having him in our side. I think he is now the best nine in the game. I am also not surprised that his name is at the core of the current discussion. Plenty of I's there.

Sadly though, I still have not heard that single letter word from Robbies lips.

The most we have heard is that one part of the review found Potter had trouble communicating with some of the players, which we should all agree is a legitimate concern if true, at the same time Potters future was being weighed by the club as to whether he would be extended or not.

Suddenly its snowballed to a Farah led revolt with Mayer a co-conspirator.

Tallis is suddenly Mr Upfront about comments Robbie made in private nearly a year ago, if which we know zero about the context or intent.

Ritchies article was about the time everybody lost their head but I've seen nothing to corroborate or confirm much of what he speculated about. Just wish everybody would calm down for a second.

i dont think there's anything wrong with asking players about their opinions.

I take every Happy post on its merits, we butt heads more often than we agree, though seeing the elements of the report leaked are Potter based, and only Potter based, tells you alot about the status of the club as a whole…

I hate white-anting... people would say poison works, yet I would set fire to the entire upper structure because flames arent selective. Love the team.... wouldnt pee on upper management if they were on fire.

Well said LA T…..everyone is jumping up and down about nothing. has anything actually happened that was in the paper?not one thing.......has Potter been sacked.NO

Is Kidwell in charge,is Payten....is Robbie the devil that wears PRADA...no no no no no.

The only dog here are the media villians who hear whispers and report them as facts. And of course Tallis who is either a bold face liar,or who has taken something said in confidence over a year ago and applied it now.Either way low act.

As far as Im concerned the only thing I do know is that Potter has until the end of the year and that seems pretty faor to me.

Indeed it would be a poor review if players weren't consulted given they are the ones being coached. What the club does with that information is an entirely different kettle of fish.

Yep Tallis is a dog. He is a journo and has published off the record comments. As liw as it gets in his new profession. Grub of the highest order.

Guaranteed if Cam Smith said Bellamy was a nutter he wouldnt have leaked it.

Why wouldn't Farah fire up? So what if Farah thought that last year. It was common knowledge Potter was a poor communicator. There was a review and as a consequence Payten and Kidwell were appointed as assistants.
To this point the team had far exceeded expectations and certainly hasn't appeared to be any disharmony. So maybe Farah had changed his mind this year.

Maybe Gordie, who I believe to be an honest man, should have asked Farah whether he still felt that way before going public with what IMO would have been a private conversation

i'm led to believe potter was close to tallis from the dragons days.

my assumption is that tallis knows farah is the one behind wanting to get rid of potter and is sick of the way he is treating him (being 2 faced to the media or whatever).

the claims from tallis aren't exactly explosive, the way farah words his answers makes his stance quite clear. i think the conversation with ayoub on triple m dug robbies hole deeper.

It is a real low blow from Tallis.

A private conversation from over 12 months ago, to make that public now is a very low blow.

He has made Farah look extremely bad. I agree with Tallis that Farah silence before today about the coach has been deafening.

Tallis has just added a few more grenades to the raging fires. The mis trust in the organisation was already at an all time high. This just puts the icing on it.
