First car ever owned?

My second was a ‘77 HX Sandman with a 253 in bright orange.
Took a chick I met across the top end in it. We were heading to Broome but got stuck in Darwin after I rolled it pissed at a rodeo doing circle work. Flipped her 1.5 times ending upside down. Did some panel bashing over the next couple of days and then drove it 2600k’s back to Cairns.
It died not long after.

My first car was a maroon HG Holden Brougham with a black vinyl roof & sunroof. It came with a 327 Chev donk with the original clapped out 307 Chev as a bonus. Due to the cost of fuel as a young bloke after 18 months I sold it and bought a pristine (it still had factory plastic covering the back seat!) HG Monaro S with a 161 high compression motor.

Oh how I wish I never sold it (the Monaro) for a mere $2,500 in 1988 it would be worth a fortune now, even the Brougham would be worth high tens of thousands. I only got $50 for the clapped out 307 from the wreckers.

1969 Ford Cortina, in baby 💩 Brown. $850 in May 1985, on the corner of GWY at Old Mt Druitt, opposite where all the car yards are at "Minchinbury" now 😂
Blew it up in less than a year, traded it on a TC Gemini 🤍
Bought the wife a baby poo brown Cortina with a black vinyl roof when we moved to Wollongong. Went like an ant trapped in molasses.
Edit: I had a great TC back in the day but bought a bomb with that one.

Where do you sleep these days?
Not in a tiny panel van.

The Mini was hard to roll, it was on rails, and I could shove it in to any gap. I could get it under the belly of a semi’s trailer, while driving. I could do the same thing on a bike too.
Ahhh the days when I had no respect for anyone’s life, thank god they are over. 🤦‍♂

1983 Holden WB Kingswood Ute with a Statesman DeVille front end and a 308. It was a beast. Bought it off my pisshead neighbour for $1200 and it was stolen by black fellas who torched it less than a year later.
I had a WB for a while, had a bull bar made out of fence pipe. I cleaned up an islander lady going through a reddy, and she did a runner in her car before the cops turned up, so, I did a runner too.

We all grow up, eventually! 😉

Just a query whilst thinking first cars, youth and days gone bye- I presume most people learnt on a manual? My 14 year old daughter looks at me weirdly when I talk about a manual as against everything auto these days. I miss being able to really 'drive a car' but having said that my knees after 2 x ops like the auto 🙂.

Yes, learnt to drive in an FC with three on the tree, second one had speco shift three on the floor before I changed it over to a red donk with 4 speed. Hard to find a manual in a new car now. When I was looking to purchase a new ute for work/travelling it was pretty much Toyota and only in the lower ranges. Most others and top range Toyota were all auto. Ended up buying one of the last V8 79 Series Landcruisers.

The FC ute I am restoring will remain close to original - warm grey, twin strombergs and headers with three on the tree and drum brakes (initially - to sneak past engineering and get it registered). I will add seat belts and HR front end for a bit of safety down the track.

I plan on teaching my grandson to drive in it - once he masters use of the clutch in his old mans Hilux. If he can drive and park an FC with crash box and no power steering he will be OK with a modern car on the road!
