First car ever owned?

Mine was a passed down British car called a Vanguard 6. It had no syncro in first or second gears so had to double shuffle the clutch (some of you young ones might need to look that up). It was built like a tank in dull grey with red and cream bench seats and a gear stick that came up from the floor like an old truck.
It was fabulous!! Really learnt a lot about driving with that beast.

Just a query whilst thinking first cars, youth and days gone bye- I presume most people learnt on a manual? My 14 year old daughter looks at me weirdly when I talk about a manual as against everything auto these days. I miss being able to really 'drive a car' but having said that my knees after 2 x ops like the auto 🙂.
I was always vehemently manual - autos were for the ladies and the boys who put gel in their hair.
About 7-8 years ago, I was on a trip to the cape and one of the 70 series that were with us had an auto conversion. He handled every river crossing and embankment with ease. I had a drive and its chalk and cheese. If you want to do tough tracks off road, a manual doesnt compete with an auto. Not long after I noticed that the 4WD 24/7 crew on Youtube were sprouting autos for the same reasoning.
I ended up relenting and bought an automatic 200 series. My daily driver is still manual though.

Ah the old days of basic cars- the quarter vent window, a AM transistor radio hanging from the rear vision mirror, foot operated high beam switch, manual door lock buttons, lights that didnt auto turn off and returning to a flat battery, no head rests, front bench seat, lap seat belt- all the fun from my family's second car. The 2nd car was a 1959 VW Beetle with the turn indicators on the mid cabin mount.

Edit- the front bench seat wasnt the VW. In case thoroughly knowledgable are wondering.

The days when you could wind car's up after midnight, take a suburb to hit top speed, doing 3,4 suburb hot laps passing beers n water pipes from 1 car to the other, with the rest of the world peacefully asleep
