I've said it's been mentioned a few times, But I saw this earlier and thought it's worthy of discussion.
Interesting Take (From someone that was there and there abouts) on the WT's Training Culture.
Listen from about 3:50

From as far back as 2002 Sheens bought a couple reserve graders from the Roosters to raise the bar at Training,
To a mid 30's Farah coming back from Souths and Blitzing everyone at Training 20 odd years later....

Whatever it is we're doing, We're not doing it well enough - And it's not a new thing.....

I made mention of there's too many blokes smiling in our Training Photos some time back and was taken apart because 'Blokes are allowed to have fun at Work'
How's having fun at work working out for us?

Like they say, If it was supposed to be fun, They'd call it fun.... Not Work.

The last decade we’ve recruited blokes with the wrong mentality $$$, they aren’t going to drive standards. Standards come from within a playing group.

Even when we have bought Players from good culture....
They're like Piss in a Pond at the Wests Tigers, They're broken down until they forget who and where they were and just go with the flow.
Blokes aren't going to put in until they vomit (figuratively) Unless someone is making them,
And we're not doing that.

For too long the employees have ruled the Roost here,
From as far back as a young Benji and Robbie who found early success (Probably too early)

Only one man since has been great enough to take on the task of dragging the squad further.
and we got him a bit too late and for not long enough.

Yeah, definitely truth in that.

Richo blasting those blokes laughing in the stands is proof he gets it. WT pay these guys obscene amounts of money to play, it takes someone strong enough to demand something real in return. Too often in the past the admin have been just as relaxed as the players.

Benji’s biggest task is to bring the group together and get them playing with desire, with the senior guys we have coming next year, he has a genuine opportunity.

They should all be wrestling 35 players each and the office staff 🤪

I found comfort in the bloke that wouldn't wear that hadn't won much coming into the season
- Then had to watch the blokes that did cop it go above and beyond and have such a good year....

Clearly we weren't fit enough or strong enough last season so the off/pre-season sessions need to be targeted at addressing those deficiencies. However, most of this has to come from the individual - they have to be doing the hard yards to prepare for pre-season.

Benji and co. need to fuel the desire for success and provide an environment for the players to succeed. They can make them do repetition after repetition if needed; but to truly drive improvement and change it has to come from witin the playing group. It is their desire to succeed fuels growth and success.

Surely we have all played in a pub team at some stage that was really just going through the motions. Compare that to coming into A grade for the first time. Who is driving standards? The senior players.

Luai, Api, Taruva and Olam have played in the best systems and know the score. They should be setting standards and driving players to achieve, both young and old. The coaching staff can yell and push and cajole all they want - the playing group sets the standards.

That is why someone like Luai, is isn't afraid to spay his mates is a great pickup. I think Api puts in, but I'm not sure he is the guy to drive cultural change - he is more of a "carry the team on his back" sort of guy. I sincerely hope that Luai doesn't fall into that trap and instead drives individuals to better themselves and the club..

There is time for being flogged and a time to have a bit of fun at training. I hope there are plenty of up and unders this off/pre season.

Players don't set / accept the Standards....
The coaching staff are responsible for the Programs and making sure the Standards as required are met.
It's not happening...

For 10+ years and 4-5 coaches it's not happening.

Sorry perhaps I came across wrong. The coaching staff have to set minimum standards yes, and set the conditions for success. But the playing group has to push each other to better than the minimum standard. That's how good teams evolve.

I will bet my arse that Penrith and Melbourne are driven as much to succeed from within the playing group as from external pressures. Any successful team operates in this way - military, business or NRL.

I do strongly agree. One of the common denominators over the years under severall coaches is the inability to play 80 minutes. I struggle to understand how this isn't noted and isn't improved upon.
It is extremely tough to watch an excellent 60 minutes become redundant due to a horrid 20.
I do strongly believe Jarome Luai's character shifts this at the club. He knows what works and what needs to be done. The dead wood needs to be moved on and to have a proven winner on deck players will no longer hide away from the limelight.

Agreed....
Although I think the Stronger Clubs - Have better systems that are aiming higher than everyone else.
Seen an interview with Blore coming into this week where he said (I'm paraphrasing from memory)
he was happy to just be an NRL Player pre Melbourne....
Now he's pushing himself to be better every day - Or something similar.

We're not even in the same league....

That's it - thats the cultural change we need. I had hoped Api and Olam would be the drivers, but probaly not the right characters. I trust that Luai is the same here as he was with the Panthers - setting and driving standards.

In the video from your original post it was clear that Sheen bought in outside influencers from Easts to drive the change in performance he was after. This is what I meant by the playing group driving standards and culture.

If the coach chips you for not performing that is one thing - but when the mate who you are in the trenches with does it that is another thing altogether.

Heartbreaking.....
The 3 Squad fillers Sheens bought from the Roosters that came in and whipped our experienced
Blokes have careers of a combined 34 NRL games...

How low are we?

Expecting (more like hoping) a huge pre-season for Latu, Tallyn, Kit Laulilii & Faagutu whose seasons didn't quite go as planned this year.

If they aren't moved off, you would also hope Matamua & To'a put in absolute belters of pre-seasons in what could be last chance saloon for them.

Api, Bird & Royce Hunt in relatively early in the pre-season will help push the standards too!

It’s concerning when a 18 year old kid (Galvin) is the fittest in the club during pre season. The bar needs to be raised this off season big time right through the grades.
Not surprising though is it when all our backs were discarded by other clubs. I’d say fitness was probably used in their needs assessments.

Is this Joel Caine?
Havent listen yet but heard him on radio mention this a few weeks back.
Roosters reserve graders shaming our 1st graders in the early days
