Former Australian and Roosters captain Brad Fittler is set to make a stunning comeback at the Auckland Nines in February.
The 41-year old, known in his playing days for a lethal left-foot step, is poised to join his former Roosters side at the inaugural event, pending approval from the NRL, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
"Pumped about given the opportunity to play again for the roosters. Demi has been keeping me fairly fit. #icebath," Fittler posted on Twitter.
Fittler could become eligible to play by putting pen to a contract similar to the $1 arrangement Manly drew up for their own club icon Ben Kennedy in 2007.
"We'll be investigating the proposal with the NRL when they reopen on Monday," Roosters chief operating officer Brian Canavan told reporters.
The move would provide the Nines with a major draw while also assist the Roosters' playing group, who had numerous members involved in the World Cup, and will also be asked to front up for the World Club Championship against Wigan in February.
Fittler retired in 2004 after a career that spanned 336 NRL games for the Roosters and Penrith Panthers, 31 State of Origin appearances for New South Wales, and 40 games for Australia.
The man they call 'Freddy' was a member of Penrith's 1991 premiership winning side, before captaining the Roosters to a grand final win over the Warriors in 2002.
He later moved into the coaching ranks, guiding the Roosters for 58 matches between 2007 and 2009.
The two-day NRL Nines tournament starts at Eden Park on February 15.
