Wests Tigers can announce that its High Performance Manager, Steve Folkes, will be leaving the Club at the end of the season.

Folkes joined Wests Tigers in 2010 and since then has been a key member of Head Coach Tim Sheens’ coaching staff.

Chief Executive Stephen Humphreys said that he would be sorely missed.

“Steve has made a substantive contribution to Wests Tigers over the last couple of years. His experience and professionalism has been of great value to us and we wish him well with his endeavours.”

Folkes added:

“I have greatly appreciated the opportunity the Wests Tigers gave me. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at a great Club.

“I have very much enjoyed working with great coaches Tim Sheens and Peter Gentle, their support staff and the players. I have learned a great deal”.
Sheens also praised Folkes for his help and support.

“Steve has been a tremendous help to me. His expertise and knowledge of the game has been second to none. But this is an excellent opportunity for him and the Club wishes him all the best.

“That said, we still have him on board for this season and there is definitely a job to do. I’m sure he’d love nothing more than a Wests Tigers premiership come the end of the season.”

Folkes will take up the new position of NRL Assistant Coach with St George Illawarra from 2012.

Thats dissapointing we are a better side for Folkes input…..I would of liked Gentle to be moved on has been around for to long.Well the coaching sofa is very cosy at the Tigers..better to move on the positives .

Disappointing IMO, Good luck to him, I truly believe Folkes has been a significant contributor to the New Tougher Tigers.

Terrible decision making by Humphreys. More bad management.

Folkes has been great, however I think that Humphreys could do little to keep him. He will have a bigger role at the Saints that is not available at the Tigers. The assistant at the dragons will have a bigger role than the assistant coaches will at the tigers, he wants a bigger role.

Thanks Folkesy, and good luck moving forward

Sad news about Folkes. Good luck to him. Has been an asset to WT.

Does this open the door for Todd Payten to take over as Defence Coach. Great technique and could really mentor the young forwards coming through.

Also help with our salary cap if he retires.

Yes, because a staff member resigning their position is **ALWAYS** the result of bad management, and never the result of circumstances beyond an organisation's control (i.e. a senior staff member resigning their position to take a promotion to a more senior role at another organisation).

I know a lot on here really rate Folkes but I have yet to hear one valid reason for him being so good.

No big loss.

It's been a pleasure to see the attitude shift in his time hear.

Now it is up to the senior playing group to remain at that level and instill it in whoever comes through the ranks

We go for weeks with nothing much happening behind the scenes and in a matter of days, we loose our assistant coach, talk of players being traded and a salary cap violation notice for last year, sure make this forum a more interesting place to visit

Exactly but remember, Sheens and Humphreys are to blame for everything. It doesn't matter if the Dragons offered him big cash to join them in the knowledge their coach lacks NRL experience and having someone like Folkes is good for mentoring and as a cover.

Bad bad move. Signing Sheens and releasing Folkes. Its like a nightmare.

This was always coming and this really doesn't shock me in the slightest. Folkes said from the beginning he would only stay until a coaching position became available. This was always a part time gig for him and he was up front an honest about it. Of course though, management has to be blamed for this. Travesty I tell you, total travesty!

Agree. I wish Folkes all the best at the Dragons. He has certainly been an asset to the Wests Tigers and people laying blame and it's through no fault of WT management that he is moving on towards a new opportunity.

Good luck Folkesy Hopefully the influences you have had at the Tigers will stay around for a while and we can send you off on the right note
