Fonua

Fonua certainly provided something we haven't had previously on that side, although I don't think Kev was playing badly this season, perhaps just not able to provide the sort of lift and go forward that Fonua is capable of. I hope Mahe can be consistent and works on his handling. The grubber kick through near our line looks a worry - especially if he has to bend down and collect a bouncing ball.

Does anyone else sense something is going on around Kev's non appearance last game?? He isn't injured I don't think - and Ivan seemed a little cagey!

Yep - something is not quite right. Hope he hasn’t tested positive- have you seen those arms!!

I don’t know about social media. Not into it but I just read he was attending a family funeral - but if what you say is true, still all seems a little strange

I took Ivan's comment as more scoffing at a suggestion there was something shady to Kev not playing…

But re Fonua, chalk and cheese... he's gotta stay now. I like how he kept quiet and worked hard on fitness etc in ISP until he got his chance.

Kev wasn't playing badly but there is no way I'd pick him ahead of Mahe after the last game.

Unfortunate for Kev and I think he is only signed for this year?

Kev has really improved under Ivan but Fonua was a beast waiting for his chance and putting in the effort in ISP all season.'

It is really Fonua's spot to lose now.

Hope we see more of this… Lol

He is now my favourite player.

Here are some other pretty massive calls. He can be the most damaging centre in the game and I think he is going to be better than Tuiaki. He is a game changer for us.

From WWOS
Mahe Fonua has revealed he was dropped by Wests Tigers coach Ivan Cleary, only to earn a recall before putting in a match-turning performance in Thursday's win over North Queensland.

After earning a reprieve from Cleary, the Tigers wrecking ball took his opportunity with both hands as he trampled over the Cowboys in his side's 20-12 defeat at Leichhardt Oval.

Fonua turned in arguably the game of his career as he ran for 215 metres, made five tackle busts and one linebreak as well as a string of bell-ringing tackles that left the Cowboys stunned.

It was a rollercoaster week for the 25-year-old who was on Monday told he would be dropped, only to earn a second chance 24 hours later.

"It's been a pretty eventful week actually," Fonua said after picking up man-of-the-match honours.
\
\
\
"At the start of the week I was actually told I wasn't playing.

"Then I got a call late Tuesday night to tell me that I was playing. That's rubgy league - it was a massive turn of events in 24 hours.

"I saw it as a second chance and an opportunity to cement a spot in the team."The circumstances of Fonua's recall remain somewhat of a mystery.

Cleary said Kevin Naiqama had been withdrawn from the game but would not detail why - only that it was not for disciplinary reasons.

Cleary will now have little choice than to include Fonua in his team to take on Penrith next week.

It was a breakout effort for Fonua in his first year back in the NRL after two season in the English Super League with Hull FC.

Asked why he brought Fonua back from England, Cleary said: "What we saw in him was probably what everyone saw tonight.

"Mahe's one of those guys, sometimes when he gets the ball, both coaches hold their breath. Tonight he had all the right moves. He was a threat constantly, he's a presence as well.

"Back at the Storm he was a good player but there was an error or two around him.

"Generally speaking if you asked the oppositon whether they wanted to play against him or not

I'll believe that when I see it.

If Fonua performs (and hey if he keeps this effort up all year, FANTASTIC).
That makes an interesting question for our backline.

We never had the issues on the Kev/MWZ side as we did with the Nofo/Marsters side.

I think MWZ is underrated in his defense. Clearly he combined well with Fonua and that's a sign of a good winger.

Kev can then compete with Nofo for the other wing spot. Nofo seems to be doing everything right but the big D. However our defense is only as good as our weakest spot and if he doesn't get it right then moving Kev to the wing will stop the leakage.
