Any F1 fans on the forum? I’m not a big fan but my sister-in-law’s first cousin, George Russell, has replaced Lewis Hamilton (out with Covid) in the Mercedes this week. Qualified front row of the grid. Exciting times for the family, I’ll be up at 4am to watch.

Love my F1 but it’s hard work following it when living in Australia. Not to keen on a 4am start, I’ll probably watch the replay when I get up.

It’ll be an exciting couple of years for aussies I think. Mclaren should be strong next year with the Merc engine so Ricciardo should be closer to the front and Piastri could well find himself in F1 if he can do well in F2. F3/GP3 champions have a pretty good record of going on to do well in F1.

I love F1 and cant stand Hamilton. George Russell has just proved the emperor has no clothes.

I agree huge F1 fan here too can't stand Hamilton he's been way over the top with his BLM stuff and imposing his will onto others.

But yes agree if Russell can step straight into his car and pop it on the front row when he doesnt even properly fit the car that says a lot.

Hamilton is a good driver no doubt but he's had the best car for god knows how long, he only wants average drivers beside him ie Bottas he couldnt handle anyone like Max Ricciardo or even a Perez in the same car. Look at the hissy fits he had when Rosberg was his partner.

Agreed 100%. He is a good driver, he would be in the best 3 or 4 in the current field which is weak when you consider we once had Schumacher, Senna, Prost all in the same races.

Listing Hamilton alongside Schumacher and Senna is embarrassing. He is NIgel Mansell level.

I don’t mind Hamilton , he seems like a decent bloke . He’s just so much better than many other drivers . It’s funny Dan , is widely considered one of the only ones in the field who have the skills to rival Hamilton . He just doesn’t haven the politics of other drivers , like Carlos Sainz, and Verstappen , which means he hasn’t ever had the full backing , or car , to challenge him . Even at red bull , verstappen and himself would split the results , until his last season, where the team clearly said catch you later to him , and gave him a dud car , and race plan.
He will go down as this generations Alonso , especially if he does somehow manage a title . The most , talented of his generation . But always in a dud car .

Disagree. IMO Danny Ric, Sainz, Verstappen are all the equal of Hamilton. I would go as far to say that there are probably 6 or 7 drivers who in Hamiltons car, win the championship.

I also dont think its because Ricciardo is not good at politics, it is because he is a threat and the top two teams (prior to this year) had established world champions int he car 1 seat.

Yeah I'm a massive fan, I've pretty much watched 90% of all races over the past 8 or 9 years. This weekend has shown you can throw just about anyone in that Mercedes car and they'll put it on the front row. Give Russell another week in the car and he'll probably beat Bottas, who is a solid number 2 driver and nothing more. Verstappen, Leclerc, Ricciardo and maybe Norris would give Lewis an awfully hard time if they had that Merc seat.

He was the number 1 at Red bull before verstappen came along . And verstappen had the royal passage to number 1 , even though it’s debatable whether he was ready for that . That’s the type of stuff I’m talking about . Sainz was also another who was very heavy through his dad behind the scenes . F1 seems very political to me . I know back in the day , many of the actual best drivers never got a run , because they couldn’t drum up the funds for a drive .

Today it may as well be who gets pole position then move onto the next circuit.

Don't know about 6 or 7 but H...Hamilton's is definitely good ...but teh car is helping big time Hamilton's car is definitely on a different page than the rest of the field

Yea totally , but just look at Bottas . He tends to be just slightly ahead of the pack , not like Hamilton who looks like he’s running against formula 2 cars . You can only really judge that way .

The other problem is the performance difference between cars. It's become boring to watch Mercedes win every race and the only thing keeping it interesting is the mid-field battle. The rules shake-up for 2022 can't come quick enough.

Yeah, I've always been a big F1 fan but have really lost interest the last few years. The move from fta didn't help for me either.

F1 is massively political, my point was that its not because Ricciardo is bad at the political game.

Verstappen is very good, IMO on a par with Ricciardo but MUCH younger and has the backing of his Dad. Kinda makes sense for RB to put their eggs in that basket. Sainz does have the cred of his Dad but IMO he is the real deal.

Ricciardo will not get a drive in the tops teams until one of the big guys retires. Ricciardo will only get a car 1seat and IMO Ferrari are going to struggle for a few years. IMO the World Champion drives a Mercedes for the forseeable future. Daniel may be a chance when Hamilton has had enough of winning.

I hope you are right. When he signed I thought it was a wise move but ever since, Renault has been more competitive. Would love to see them challenge RB.

Was a much bigger fan in the 90's and early 2000's. Great crop of drivers around that time. Prost, Senna, Berger into Schumi, Hill, Coulthard, Hakkinen, Alonso.

Busier life doesn't enable me to sit up and watch it all the time. My young bloke enjoys watching them when not on at a rude hour.

I respect Hamilton's achievements but I do agree with most in that Verstappen, Vettel, Bottas, Leclerc, even Albon and Ricciardo would probably win it out in that car.

He's not comparable to previous generations of greats.

Enjoy watching the younger fellas like Stroll and Russell get around. Stroll has come a fair way this year with Racing Point.

I also dont think its because Ricciardo is not good at politics, it is because he is a threat and the top two teams (prior to this year) had established world champions int he car 1 seat.

My prediction is Mclaren take another step with him instead of Sainz .

Agree. He won't be driving with that pusbox Renault unit.
