Forwards depth

Said it before - And I'll say it again…
2 most important defensive positions on the field are centre / 2nd row...
Ours stink on both sides (And have done for years)
- And we've never bothered to recruit there...
Before it used to be props and we had 100 back rowers, Now we have a hundred props and no back rowers... It's a long time running joke.

Losing Gareth Ellis has been devastating for us - His centres shined outside him and he was solid as a rock.

We need quality centre 2nd row combos - Or it won't matter how many Tedescos we have...

Maybe with Idris arriving the coaches could try to put 5kgs on Chee Kam and move him into the backrow?

He was a back rower but then moved into the centres. Probably to help with the injuries he received in the forwards. But IMO he is a back rower

A lot of people have a lot of faith in the younger guys who did so well at NYC level last year to step up a notch or two this year, history tells me that is very unrealistic. I look at most of the very good back rowers have been on the scene for years and have taken a long time to get to there present standard. Okay there is the odd exception, but back row is one of the hardest gigs in the game and development takes a long time. These kids might make the grade, but 2017 I doubt they will play much of a part in what happens at NRL level

A good experience second row will help the halves and the centres.
With Idris, Simona at centre and Heleta, Chee Kam and hopefully Kev as backup centre. I think we should be making 2nd row the priority if anyone gets sign up for 2017\. If we don't sign a 2nd rower I'd move ET to RHS second row and have Sue and Edwards share the Lock position.
Edwards I feel could make the 40 odd tackles that ET made at lock if he played the 60 mins there. Id have Sue start at 13 for 20 mins, then have a break a come back as a prop rotation player. ET to play 2nd row for 80 mins. Lawerence to play 60 mins at LHS 2nd row , with Alioia coming on as a 2nd row plus Middle forward replacement.

II agree, we also lost Dwyer at the same time

Dwyer…
Oh yeah... He made that big hit that time.
Loved Simon, But he was hardly our saviour (Let's be realistic)
Beau Scott would have helped enormously last year...

Yeah very true , he was definitely heading the right direction

I thought he was coming on really well at the time. He had some pace and ran good lines in attack and it's not like the hit he put on JWH was the only big hit he ever delivered. He likely would have been better than just about anything else we've trotted out in the second row since…

Totally agree… And I was a massive fan.
I'm not at all playing down his contributions or talent - But some carry on here like we lost Bradley Clyde.
He was a rookie second rower who had 30 odd games under his belt
Mostly at PROP - Coming off the bench I might add....
Yes, He could have been anything - And a bit longer under Ellis he may well have been, History will never know....
But he had a ways to go....

I think Hughes is right. If don't change the team, how can expect the team's results to change?

As has been mentioned, relying on the young blood is very risky and Lawrence can't play at the level required for long enough and E Taylor brings everything to our back row - except size.

We really need a big, tough, quality back rower asap.

Beau Scott was terrific for Parra's defence. If we had him we would have been playing in the finals

I would run with the following: 13) Sue, 12) Aloai 11) MCK
I would have Lawrence off the bench however, I don't think we have another first grade quality back rower at the club. Lovett, Edwards are not good enough and lack talent.

We may unearth another Aloai this year in Masters who knows but there are question marks in a position which, defensively is he most important on the field

I had a brain snap and forgot ET if he signs on 13) Sue, 12) Aloai 11) ET Bench: Lawrence, MCK.
If we pick the right players we lack depth but are not that weak in the back row.

I don't think we can afford to carry two second rowers on the bench when we have to carry a bench hooker.

Good point. MCK drops off the bench.

Our pack hasn't been able to crack it week in week out. We show signs one week and then the next we fade.

I am a huge fan of Lawrence he has a big ticker and this is not a put down but the fact we list him in our second row highlights one of our problems.

But our biggest problem has always been our defence.

I agree, I've stated in previous posts I think it's due to the size of our pack and they can't back up 2 weeks in a row.

Thanks why I'd have Sue at 13 and ET in the 2nd row.
With Sue at 13 plus Woods and Ava up front, we have a much bigger pack than playing ET at 13 and two others second rowers.

Starting Front Row; Woods,Ava with Ballin (DH)
Second, Lawerence and ET
Lock, Sue
I'd go with a bench of Grant, JJF, Alioia ,Liddle

Yep good options with what we have. I was thinking Lawrence at lock. Being an ex-centre or 5/8 he he should have some ball play skills. Not that he liked to pass when he was a centre.

Gotta catch before you can pass….his hands arent real good
Rowdy shouldnt have too much responsibility...get ball, run hard, tackle

I'll throw Matt Eisenhuth in as a smokey for a backrow spot..strong end to the ISP season earning a spot in the extended NRL squad…rated very highly by Stringer especially for his defence...
