Fullback play??

An observation and question about todays fullbacks.

When did the fullbacks role change from a support player to playmaker? I dont understand why a fullback should be a playmaker when we already have two halves.

Darius boyd and Billy slater are good dont get me wrong, but i find the plays used today are so predictable from the fullbacks. Tedesco hasnt been on fire which i blame partly due to him getting the ball with no room to move after being passed from dummy half to a middleman then to him.. His speed is biggest asset which has been degraded since hes getting the ball too late.

I for one miss the old way where a fullback just snoops around the forwards and picks up an offload or short pass around the ruck. Hodgson was very good at doing it, especially with the likes of laffranchi etc. Cannot remember the last time Tedesco has got an offload at pace and busts the line.

I dont want him to not get involved in the backline movement using some pass moves. I just dont want too see it regularly. Can you imagine him lurking around the forwards all day? Getting offloads or inside passes? Hed give the defence a massive headache. If he stays and matulino ,(good offloader) comes here I hope he tucks that ballplaying back a tad and just play what he sees and use his speed to burn slow markers.

Thoughts?

I think it changed when the game developed left and right halves instead of halfback and five eighth. The fullback needed to be the extra ballplayer on either side. Just my opinion on it

Teddy was hanging around the ruck a lot last week v the Cows, even made a break off a woods off-load which lead to one of our tries. Hopefully this is one of the changes Cleary introduces. Wouldn't mind seeing some inside-outside passes utilising Teddy & Nofo etc. We need a lot more variety than the old sweep play & definitely have the capability to produce more.

I noticed that. Just thought it might of been a pone off targeting the cows forwards.

Yep nofo and tedesco needs to change it up. Sweep plays work best if our forwards are on top. Which is rarely these days.

I noticed quite often today whenever Moylan came up into the line for penrith he completely killed off their momentum and made the whole side look disorganised.

100% right

Yeah he played one of their most dangerous attacking weapons in Peachey out of the game. Gave him very little ball at all, and no early ball.

Good point and have noticed this myself with Teddy - teams just see it coming and cramp him for room.

Last week, he sniffed around the middle and busted through a few times which was good to see.

Pretty sure it was the way Taylor coached him to play. Opposition see it a mile away now and just cramp him up. Hodgo scored a squillion tries busting through the middle from offloads which couldn't really be defended against and was used as one our best attacking weapons apart from benji circa 2005\. No reason Cleary can't bring it back for Teddy, he would be ballistic through the middle.

Yep your right although he should be able to do both Trbojevic does it perfectly and quickly becoming the best fullback in the game IMO

Interesting discussion. First of all, the question asked was when did fullbacks first begin to become play makers. I'm not really sure but I do recall Brett Hodgson being a play maker back in 2005\. Actually, together with Prince, Marshall and Farah, the Tigers had four of them. Regarding, Moylan, I have to agree with others and say that he jolts the Panthers' attack with his random entering the line and off the cuff running and passing. Is this because he lacks real speed as a fullback? He should leave the play making to Cleary and Martin. I also think that Teddy tries to do too much at the moment by trying to generate breaks on his own instead of merely running off the halves and forwards.
