Geale stripped of world title

Daniel Geale has been stripped of his World Title because he is fighting Mundine

That is bad management , they must of known they would have to fight the recognized challenger in his division before taking the Mundine fight

I think its more about exposure happy - Geale and his management obviously think fighting Mundine will give him a greater profile and be more marketable for main event etc - Mundine has always worked the media and tv well and i think Geale wants to cash in on this.

Actually just read another more informative piece

IBF has given him permission but the WBA said he should fight someone else

Geale is getting screwed over royally in fact

If someone wants to post the story it is on the ninemsn page

This technotard wouldn't have a clue :crazy

I read an article after his last fight & it said that he was planning a mandatory fight for one of his belts with either Soliman or Golovkin but that was written before the fight with Mundine was announced. Originally Geale was ringside & was hopping to fight the winner of the fight between Martinez & Chavez JR but it didn't eventuate. I'll post that link HT & don't worry mate, i didn't know how to do it until a helpful forum member explained to me how. P.S send me a PM if you want & i'll forward the instructions how to copy links if you want.

Daniel Geale is angry, annoyed and frustrated by the "unfair" decision to strip him of his WBA middleweight Super boxing title before he has even received the belt he famously earned in Germany two months ago.

The WBA decided at their annual convention in Jakarta to strip Geale for opting to fight Anthony Mundine instead of their regular middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan.

Geale's American-based promoter Gary Shaw is waiting to hear back from WBA boss Gilberto Mendoza and is prepared to go to his headquarters in Panama after the convention in Indonesia is finished.

Geale, who is also the IBF middleweight world champion, added the WBA Super title to his portfolio by dethroning Felix Sturm in Germany in early September.

"We found it frustrating that because of Felix Sturm not fighting his mandatory for so long that the WBA put their ruling on us and they gave us half the amount of time that you usually get to have the mandatory," Geale told AAP on Friday.

"They enforced what Felix Sturm hasn't done on to me, which is definitely unfair.

"I have had the title now for two months, I still haven't received my belt in the mail and they've stripped me of the title.

"So, as you can expect, we're angry and frustrated and annoyed by that."

Geale was adamant his IBF sanctioned title defence against Mundine scheduled for next year would go ahead.

The IBF granted him an exception to regulations to fight Mundine next ahead of another Australian, Sam Soliman, who is the mandatory contender for that organisation's title.

"We basically knew whichever direction we went unfortunately we weren't going to be able to retain both titles," Geale said.

"It's very difficult for a unified champion to have more than one title.

"We believe we've made the right decision to stay with the IBF."

Geale made it clear he didn't have a problem with fighting heavy-handed Golovkin, who has an imposing record of 24-0, 21 KOs.

"At some stages, we were of the opinion that it was going to be okay (with the WBA) that I was going to fight Golovkin, not when they made me, but we definitely are going to fight him," Geale said.

"We have no problem fighting anybody in the world at the moment."

Shaw stressed Golovkin already had a fight booking next January with American cable TV network HBO and he had tried to contact the WBA about their decision.

"They are in Jakarta and I am in a middle of a bad storm on the east coast of the United States, but I have reached out for them. I am waiting to hear from them," Shaw told AAP.

Happens all the time in boxing… This is why very few boxers are able to unify titles and even fewer can hold them for any decent length of time. Boxing organisations have egos the size of Jupiter - title fights have to be their bouts rather than share them with others. They also maintain their own rankings lists with compulsory challengers. If you've got multiple people telling you to fight different people you can't win...

In any case, the IBF title suits Geale's purposes just fine. This would be annoying and frustrating but he's still a world champion and can bill the fight as a title fight.

Boxing is finished! Ever watch the UFC? There is never a fixed fight! Never the drama about belts and being unified or stripped for not taking a fight. Those guys want to fight and will fight anyone, they don't care.
At first I thought it was crazy and too full on but those guys are real athletes and the judges never give the wrong decision. I have always known boxing was rigged from the pro fights all the way to the armatures. Boxing judges along with crooked, money hungry people like Don King have ruined boxing.
UFC is the worlds fastest growing sport and for good reason!

I would of thought the WBA title would hold more prestige and relevance than the IBF belt?

30 years ago maybe. That stupid "Super Champion" rubbish and a level of corruption high for even boxing has tarnished their rep a bit. IBF is a perfectly acceptable title.

Having looked at Geale's record and the article again I now see Geale had the IBF title first and only ever held the "super" champion WBA belt. He never actually held the mainstream WBA belt and received the "super" champion thing after beating the German.

WBA makes there cash in Germany and that is the main reason for the decision.

Europe is the crucible of constant boxing purses and high viewer numbers.

Guys hold belts all the time and are given warnings, hell Mundine held a belt for over 18 months avoiding contenders before it was stripped.

Politics and boxing is as muddy as ever

Is the "Super-Champion" tag just the modern day equivalent of someone who has unified the 3 main titles (WBA, WBO & IBF/IBO- can't remember which one?)

It's more when they get tired of having the same person as champion and bump that guy up to super champion. Then they open up the "regular" championship so they then have 2 champions for the same division. How can you be world champion when even your own organisation recognises someone is better than you? Damn good question!!!

Back in the day WBA, WBC, and IBF were the big 3\. WBO seems to have pretty much joined them so there are basically 4 well regarded belts. And then you have your titles like IBO, WBF etc where people give up the titles to challenge for a major belt. I believe the WBA recognise you as a world champion when you hold 2 belts of the major organisations.
