Geelong Coach quit to benefit team

I read a very good article on former Geelong AFL Coach Mark Thompson last week.

He said that despite his team being successful, he realized at the end of 2010 (lost GF) that the players had stopped listening to him and he had delivered all his available speeches to the current group. He also claimed he was close to the players after a few years, it was like a father admonishing a son and disipline suffered.

He made the shock decision to quit and when the team won the 2011 Flag, he still felt he'd contributed by moving on for Chris Scott to take over.

I feel Sheens may be in a similar position to Thompson in 2010\. It's time for the players to hear a new voice.

What do you guys think?

I think he has gone on maybe two years two long, he can coach but he needs a new flock to preach to and this flock needs a new preacher. Their are a few players who probably should have been moved on but Sheens is showing heaps of loyalty and its hard to knock him for that. Its time do start again and build the platform for another ten years. I will get howled down but I would be looking at Sticky Stuart, little hard man that can get this side playing hard simple winning football.

Yes, Bomber Thompson knew they needed a new voice.

I honestly think Sheens is a better coach of youngsters than Folkes…............................but, after so many years and the foundation built, Folkes was EXACTLY the right bloke to take us to the premiership / to get us over the edge / add toughness to what Sheens had already done.

Geelong's premiership and previous success still owes a lot to Bomber, but he was right to walk when he did.

The Sheens supporters here are blind. Seriously, blind.

Look at my posts today, I've said about 10 extremely positive things about Tim and his coaching. About his record of bringing kids through. He's been great in a lot of areas.

Not one Sheens 'supporter' has quoted that though. They'll quote all the negative comments we make and say "not a real fan" or "how is it his fault" over and over and over and over….................no accountability is fine in their eyes.

No one is saying Sheens has been a bad coach. People are simply saying it's time for a change / the same dumb mistakes have happened way, way too often.

Bomber Thompson knew his side needed a new voice. Sheensy is way too stubborn to ever admit that.

ok, replace sheens…and with who? Steve Georgallis has long way to go, and this talk about Royce coming back is giving me the creeps. Sticky? Would not be happy with him running us.

Sheens has been brillant for this club got us off the floor, had us playing a style of football that was not only a winning style but highly entertaining, got us the holy grail, made our brand name popular, all and all very hard to fault the bloke but like anything in life theirs a time to move on and it probably is near that time. Today he had great game plan and should have got the bacon but he didnt and blame who you like but you know where the buck stops

I THINK Sticky would love a full time gig

Geez this question never gets old

Georgie
Stuart
Anderson
Taylor
Brown
Elliot
Stone

You might scoff at those options, but the reality is they couldn't do much worse then Sheens has already done so far this year. There are always options out there, contarary to popular belief that he's irreplaceable

I'm not a Sheens hater, nor a blind follower. I do however think that is part of the issue. But whoever thinks that if Sheens got punted or left next week then suddenly everything would fall into place and we would be unbeatable is kidding themselves.

I would love, however, to see Daniel Anderson or Matthew Elliott Coach this team.

Whoever does it, they would have to have a thick skin and keep both Tigers and Wests management happy.

yes they are options GNR but none of them really stand out. Georgallis is next in line and im happy for the succession to take place but do people actually think this guy will turn us around overnight? he'll be scratching around for a couple of seasons no matter who we have on the park.

It was only 2 or 3 seasons ago that Mr Sheens promised he would give up the coaching role if the Tigers failed to make the Semi's, on cue the players delivered so we couldn't question his coaching prowess!.
Come 2012 and the feelings of a Premiership winning coach from another code might be making sense, for all the followers who seem to have a short list of coaches already, can you imagine the applications 'If' it happens.

If they did opt for a change of coach , for me it would have to be , in this order of preference :

1\. Steve Folkes
2\. Jason Taylor
3\. Peter Gentle

And in that event i would hope that sheens was retained in some capacity .

In saying that I am a massive fan and admirer of coach Tim Sheens and i hope he remains Coach for a very long time .

I'm hoping that the strength of the relationship that Sheens has with Bellamy will see the latter take the coaching position when Sheens leaves. He's the ideal candidate.

Daniel Anderson is the pick of that lot above. There's some wacky characters there
