Goal Kicking

When do you think Sheens will be forced to use another goal kicker besides Marshall?

Can Mitch Brown kick. I thought he did for Cronulla.

Should Meaney or Mullaney play on the wing/fullback and be first choice kicker?

I am concerned Marshall's kicking may cost us an important game.

Instead of paying big dollars for Adam Blair shouldn't we try and buy a goal kicking Winger/fullback?
We seem to have a number of young forwards coming through the ranks without the need for
Blair.

I agree a good boot should be our focus re recruitment….whilever Marshall's on the field he'll be kicking

Lol, I remember when this thread came up last year. Marshall from then on in actually started kicking better. Hopefully this thread has the same effect this year.

In answer to the question, I highly doubt Sheens will want to change goal kickers. He showed last year his resistance to changing goal kickers at the start of the season when Benji was kicking at about 60% at the start of last year, I think the only time we ever changed goal kickers was when Benji dropped himself as goal kicking and handed the duties over to somebody else.

mmmm he's so hit and miss… its sooo frustrating...!!!
but that's the story of the tigers, so im used to it by now...

Meaney and Mullaney are much the same as Benji, they have good days and bad days. We just dont seem to have a week in and week out 80% sharp shooter in any grade or team

I feel like I have been bleating on about this for seasons now, but it is a serious matter.

I posted at the end of last season that if we had had a respectable goal kicking ratio of even 70% we would have run second ahead of Penrith in the Minor Premiership, and played Canberra in week 1 of the finals instead of the Roosters. As well, when that wretched game, for which am still in therapy, (Roosters v Tigers) was locked at 15-15, we had scored 3 tries to the Rorters 2, but kicked only one goal. Just another goal would have had us 17-15.

Last Saturday vs the Raiders, Benji kicked only 4 from 8, I think. If he'd kicked even 6 from 8, we'd have won 36-24 and be in the top eight right now.

It's too important for Sheens to just shrug his shoulders and hope it comes good.

Marshall has cost the WT several matches in the past. He is average and does on rare occasions produce a fantastic one. But statistics have shown he produces not enough decent goalkicking matches to be on par with most serious NRL contenders.
What most are looking at is only the full time result and saying "oh, minus the 2-3 goals he missed(4-6pts), we lost by more than that so it wasn't the cause of the loss".
This is where i totally disagree….
Take round 1 against the Bulldogs for example. WT were right in that match until WT fell away and could have been playing at a drawn scoreline around half time, but instead, WT trailed by a lousy four points which should have kept the scores level at 12 or 14(?) all before the game slipped away from them.
This comes from onfield mindset!!
Play an opposition at scores level and you play with a different attitude and don't try to play "catch up footy" which can contribute to a higher error rate especially in possession. More passes are forced and it snowballs.
Sheens needs to perhaps find the root cause of this problem and REALISE this can be backtracked to the goalkicking in most cases.

I get the sense that some people won't accept the Benji is our best option as goalkicker at the moment, but to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't want any other kicker in the competition to deliver a pressure kick. Yes he'll have bad days, but to say that he costs us games with this goalkicking, considering he sets up most of the tries to convert, is just ridiculous. I don't think its taken into account the amount of tries that we score in either corner as well, which would impact on any goalkickers percentages.

Matty every kick should be a pressure kick imo as one good thing about footy is you just never know what will happen. Benji during the four nations and the semis was kicking quite well (well at a level I found acceptable ) but he has dropped off again . Most teams these days score tries out wide so you can't really use that as an excuse . He just needs to improve his goalkicking simple as that to at least 75% at bare minimum .

He's struggling at the moment, but end of last year he started to string some consistency together.

Unfortunately, unless he wants to hand the duties over to someone else we will not see a change in kicker.

That's harsh - the blame rests with Sheen if anyone or whoever decides he should kick. All Benji can do is try his best.

You're talking about the greatest try producer in the competition and you say he costs us games?

If lui is out this week maybe miller @ half & could do the kicking & bring moltzen off the bench.

Good call tigerbenji - a little too good without being in the know.

Miller looks so natural and relaxed when kicking. There is no comparison between him and Marshall. He was potting them with ease from all over the ground against the Warriors in the wet two weeks back - 6 from 6, and followed up with 3 from 3 at Campbo last weekend (and one from one the week before).
We'd be mad not to have him kicking on Sunday.

Just a thought but if the tigers are willing to look into a big offer on Blair wouldn't it be worthwhile in doing the same for a good goalkicker winger or fullback and show some faith in our young forwards. Surely that sort of money could lure pat Richards or Brett hodgson back to the club if possible or even attract Michael Gordon although I think he signed a new deal last year. Anyone know some talented goalkickers who the tigers could scout as it doesn't look like there's anyone willing to have a punt over benji at the moment?
