I could totally believe that the club, and many of its staff are not very good (compared to staff at other clubs) at their jobs and that in the past everyone was happy, rainbows abounded in the office and they all stopped at midday to sing kumbaya. Probably had someone bringing in a cake everyday too.
The club is a business and people need to be highly competent at their jobs to remain with the club. I have no idea if the staff were or weren't any good at their job. Long service means little in the end. A big than you for your efforts, but if they can't do their jobs at an acceptable level then they deserve to be criticised (in private) and sacked if necessary. To yell at staff in public view of all other staff would be very poor management though!
Yes, you need a positive workplace culture, and people getting along well and having the occasional social event is good for morale and hence the company. But everyone needs to be accountable for their performance: Board, Managers, Coaches, Players and Office staff…
