Hannant keen to let sleeping dogs lie, NRL investigate.

Its obviously an issue for hannat and thats all that matters, others opinions dont count, that said im of the belief he's carried on a bit, but I am not him, its not for me to judge how he should feel about things close to him.

Players usually sledge opponents they quietly respect, admire or fear…they feel a need to get one up on them as their talent/skills whatever is not enough.

Gibbs is a meathead, we all know that....but as Staks said if someone at the club just booted him in the arse hard and get some sense into his thick head, and tell him just to keep playing the way he has been, which btw I think most would agree hes been our best forward so far....then everyone would be happy.

Pull ur head in Gibbo...head down, bum up, go hard and zip it.

Is Bryce a member of any religeous organisation, if not he should get a weeks community service at Hillsong, the object of a sledge is to put someone off their game and considering the Dogs got on top in the last 20 minutes your flogging a dead horse if you think that a sledge is going to make any difference.
You're mid 20's now Bryce and it's time you showed some maturity and lead by example and not be a throwback to your Dad's day of the late 70's.

If what the Telegraph reports is true (did I just type the word 'true' in the same sentence as 'Telegraph'? What was I thinking?) and all Bryce said was "That's typical of you Mormons - always wanting to be everybody's mate", that isn't vilification anyway. It's just harmless sarcasm. To vilify someone you have to say something that would lower the opinion of other people about him. How would that remark give anyone a lower opinion of Ben Hannant?

How can some subjects be OK for sledging and others not? Why is it wrong for someone to make a joke based on Hannant's religious affiliations, but OK for someone to make a joke about Bryce based on, say, his westie 'trailer-trash' origins or the fact that his only friend is Liam Fulton! Bryce and Liam used to be called 'Dumb and Dumber', apparently - why can't that be just as hurtful? Is it funny to be stupid?

If there are 'sacred' subjects that aren't appropriate as sledges, the the NRL should specify what they are.

A weeks community service at Hillsong?

That has to be against some international treaty for cruel and unusual punishment

I'l tell you why its not ok. Because just as egos in this thread will throw hands in the air and say "Where does it stop!" & "how can they draw the line with this, when that happened" - NOBODY considers the alternative. Essentially - from what I'am reading into Smeg,Stryker and Burgundy's comments, is that it should be free game. That Players are free to say what ever they want to say to get a rise out of one another, and that the league, fans and the public should just accept it.' THAT is the alternative.
Whatever people said about eachother on field in the 70's, the 80's or fing 1894 is irrelevent. We are Civilised people, it is 2010 and a line needs to be drawn. Would you all be comfortable with having your wife, children, family - vilified onfield - cos thats the freedom your defending?. And how is the "Carpark" alternative anything other then a neanderthal response - when considering that this is a Multinational, professional sport with a reputation to uphold for millions of **families** that sit down to watch it. Feels futile pointing any of this out though….

Whether it’s the 70's or now the reason why most of us love this game is because it remains, at its essence, a very tough and intense sport. This includes giving and taking an earful without discerning whether a comment ont he field was about your game, your door knocking abilities or about your mum. I for one won’t stand for fans or the establishment trying to make the toughest and greatest sport in the world some politically correct, softened version of what it is or has been.

Sledging is very much a part of cricket, tennis and other less aggressive sports and if you have been on the sidelines of a rough footy game you would know it is and will reamin a big part of this game along with much other language …

When I played footy less than ten years ago it was very much part of my game and it could give us the edge. People who can’t handle biffo or a few words of this nature should watch synchronised swimming. As for the kids - they won’t hear it or understand it until they don’t or shouldn't care.

Hannant is no doubt feeling like an idiot for making a scene. Before he became a mormon I would like to hear what he said to other players on field. No doubt the other Dogs are ribbing him all day about his performance. Some of the props in the last decade make me cringe - Think Manly, Sharks and now Hannant

If I am a car salesmen and someone on the field calls me a dodgy bastard ... I line him up next set and knock his block off. Thats it.

A couple of things that I get out of this:

1\. It shouldn't surprise anyone in the slightest that Gibbs was involved in something like this. I like him, but he's a serial meathead and is prone to saying stupid things.
2\. Yeah, I think Hannant is being a sook. Like I posted earlier, every story in the paper about him lately he is sooking about something. Harden up princess.
3\. Would love to have a sit down with Hannant and ask him his opinion of Mick Ennis acting like a pork chop on the field to put off his opponents. Pretty sure he wouldn't care if the shoe was on the other foot.
4\. The media will make out our next match against the Dogs as a square up. The focus will be on Hannant and Gibbs, and a high probability that nothing will happen when they take to the field.
