he has picked chris lawrence who is in the worst form of his career and since chris is injured he has replaced him with joel reddy who if marika was not injured would be in state cup
hes picked james tedesco who has played 4 games in his CAREER and hes picked curtis sironen who just came back from a career threatening injury and has also played only 7 games in his career and hes picked tony williams who is also in the worst form of his career. is there really no one better? in all of CITY NSW

Its a safe bet Teddy and Sirro are being picked purely to kickstart their rep careers and gain experience. No doubt they are high on NSW selectors lists as possible future stars.

I know Sironen was on their radar but I thought they has snubbed Tedesco. Maybe no one else is interested in playing in this game.

tedesco and sirro got picked because hayne and josh reynolds are out with injuries

Freddy doesn't pick the team solely by himself, and siro and teddy being picked just shows that NSW re doing a bit of forward planning

I always thought City-Country was one third contest for positions, one third reward for journeymen and one third speculation selections.

I am happy to see this, see young or risky players in rep-style footy. And double-happy that we seem to be biased towards somewhat, getting fringe players into the City squad.

he sure loves the tigers he picked robbie farah, aaron woods, chris lawrence and liam fulton in the squad but since there ALL injured he has picked joel reddy to replace chris lawrence, james tedesco to replace jaryd hayne and curtis sironen to replace reynolds thats 7 wests tigers players not to mention simon dwyer is the assistant coach.

Some very ordinary players get picked for City-Country every year but if you look at the numbers its not hard to see why.

- 16 teams with 25 first graders in each squad = 400 NRL players
- At any given time, every team has an average of 5 players injured from that 25 man squad (= 80 injuries)
- Every team has at least 1 (usually more) rookie who has played just a few games and not in contention for selection (16 players)
- Every team on average has at least one player in his final year of footy (16 players)

400 eligible players, minus 80 injured players, minus 16 rookies, minus 16 final year veterans leaves you with a pool of 288 players to choose from.
Of those, say half are from QLD, leaving you with 144 eligible players.
Of those 144, 8 are playing for Australia leaving 136 to choose from.
Once you pick 17 players for each team, you are really looking at only 100 eligible players who don't get to play in this game. Only the 100 miss worst players in the entire state miss out!

I see it as a mix of giving guys a chance to step up to the next level (for instance someone like Boyd Cordner, if he has a big game he comes into contention as an origin bolter), testing some combinations (like Farah/Pearce last year) and rewarding journeymen. Players like Tedesco and Sironen will know with their selection that they've been earmarked by Daley as potential future origin players, which should give them confidence to step it up to the next level.

"origin trial" is thrown around a lot, and in some ways it is, but in reality I think Daley and co know who will take up the bulk of the positions in the squad. For example if Peats has the game of his life, they are not going to drop Farah from the Blues from him, but if someone like Tariq Sims has a blinder they may nab a bench spot.

You guys need to realise that these selectors keep close eyes on junior rep teams as well. These 2 obviously been on the radar for a while good opportunity for them

Good point. I knew I forgot something important. If you consider each team has a few international players, it doesn't leave a huge talent pool to chose from for the City v Country game.
