Hastings For Captain

Tamou had a whole season to lead the charge last year. All he lead was the Penrith cheerleading troupe and graced the cover of the Best And Less bathrobe catalogue.
He's a massive disappointment and not the bloke that is going to inspire anyone to perform.
Even without the official title, Hastings will run the ship and then him and Douiehi will lead the way once AD comes back.
I agree that Hastings & Douiehi should be the leaders. These 5 captains fiasco was nothing more than a popularity vote. Not the case of who is a leader "follow me " type of captain.
They all lack capacity to lead and are soft on team mates if they f...up in the game. A captain has to lead from the front any get stuck into his team if required.

I'd just like a captain who has some ability and tries to win the game.
And that Earl would be Hastings....why,because he isnt a club fanboy,he is new here to us and is very familiar with the NRL and what it takes...
AD is a good guy but Hastings as we know has had mongrel in him, albeit very controlled and matured ATM...He showed the rest of the team up on Sunday and isnt even in the leadership group...the group of fairies with no heart in my opinion...

Sorry to all those beating Hastings drum but i am not yet convinced. I thought he was very average against Storm and poor in the first half against the Knights, especially in D. He definitely put in more effort in the second half and was one of the best in a very poor team. He played more of a halfback roll but also did not follow the game plan and he kicked poorly. Yes he made a few breaks but i am not yet sure he’s the golden boy some are promoting him as.

We have lost two games.
I have not seen enough from Hastings to be captain. He has played only 2 games for us and we should wait till next year before even thinking Captain for him.

I would put C on Doueini and play him in the centers. He is the only person who has done anything close to earning it other then Harry Grant! (who I realise is not playing for us).

Newcastle has come with the right strategy and right recruitment.
They recruited big impact forwards because they will at least get a 500k effort from Klemmer and Tyson Frizzle has delivered a massive effort. We have continued to pick Fringe graders. (ok we went for TPJ and had we got him it would mirror the Newcastle effort).

Newcastle also has leaders in various options. Putting Tyson and Dave K as training champions makes sense. Have these guys push the others to train harder will work. Ofcourse having Joey jump in as assistant with a few awesome juniors helps.

The 5 captains idea is too much. But lets start seeing Tamou own the charge at the front. Lets start seeing Daine get coached and own the defense at the back (this is going ot be very VERY hard for him). Hastings can own the halves, Without a go forward though nothing is going to happen.

Can't wait for Pappaii
Good post. We are just not going to match a big aggressive pack. The Dolphins pretty much got their pack sorted first so they could attract decent halves, and when they attract decent halves they will get the outside backs. We haven’t really progressed too far in a couple of decades.

Jackson Hastings says the Wests Tigers are at times too reliant on structure and need to play with more freedom as they fight to avoid their worst start to a NRL season in 15 years.

Flogged 26-4 by Newcastle on Sunday, the lacklustre Tigers' week went from bad to worse on Monday with Hastings charged with a dangerous throw and facing at least a two-game ban.

It came after the five-eighth was the only real spark in the loss, which was described by club legend Benji Marshall as below first-grade standard.

Hastings admitted he could not argue Marshall's point, as the Tigers completed at just 66 per cent and got to their kick just 12 times.

Hastings at least broke the line once, and also touched the ball four times in the set as the Tigers went up field for their only try late in the match.

"The line break shifts, we've got footy in us," Hastings said.

"We've got people that can play football. I think sometimes we may rely on structure a bit too much.

"Where the game shifts that fast over the advantage line now, and using your eyes.

"So I mean, you can sit there and say, we didn't have a platform to play off, but sometimes you've got to take the game by the scruff off the neck and try and make things happen."

Coach Michael Maguire and halfback Luke Brooks also said after last week's fighting loss to Melbourne they wanted to play with more freedom this year.

But after leading the Storm 14-4 at halftime in round one, the Tigers have since let in 48 points and scored just six.

The defeats leave them on the cusp of going 0-3 for just the second time in the joint-venture's history, and for the first time since 2007.

Sunday's poor showing has already put the spotlight back on Maguire, who survived an end-of-season review last year but remains one of the most under-pressure coaches in the NRL.

But Hastings said it could only be put on the players and their attitudes, and not coaches.

"Our discipline needs obviously working on," Hastings said.

"We give away too many penalties, offside, coming out of yardage, we put them in a corner and play-one offside, (piggyback) down and then errors in the ruck.

"It's hard to put your finger on one thing when it's happened for three halves of footy now in a row.

"The mood's disappointing and everyone needs to have a look at their own performances, not anyone else's."

Meanwhile he was adamant there was no malice in his lifting tackle on Tex Hoy, with the ban to go from two games to three if he challenges it and loses.

"It wasn't intentional," he said.

"Obviously he got put in a bit of an awkward situation at the top there, but I feel like he landed OK."

Lets cut the crap - Madge needs to put the ego away and fess up that 5 captains was a huge mistake. Its quite obvious there is only one person in this squad who is even close to captain material. Just cut the rubbish and give Hastings the captaincy.
Hastings was talking to the team in the dressing room just before they ran out. Captain number 6?

when Hastings steered the ship from 7 against knights out attack was pedestrian
And Hastings has been here for 2 games while Brooks has been here for 10 seasons...
Hastings will get to a level higher than Brooks by mid season, because he tries and sometimes gets over excited(like the tackle on Sunday)doesnt mean he isnt doing his best in a new club and tougher comp...kudos to him...

No-one is promoting him as a golden boy with all the answers. He is the bloke with the most fight in him, therefore the best we have got in that regard. That is one trait a leader needs to have. Being a mute standing in-goal looking at the ground with your shoulders slumped after yet another soft try has been let in isn't the sort of captain you need- and we've got about 14 of those players in our squad at the moment.

I think you’ll find the key lies in a balance between the two playmakers and their styles. Brooks plays extremely structured and Hastings plays eyes up. Both have there advantages.
The opportunity is there for Brooks to control the sets and hand the keys over to Hastings when we gain momentum. By doing this he becomes a support player 1st most and can use his speed and skill to finish off a unstructured play.
As long as Brooks focused on getting the shape of the team set when we are playing without momentum and most importantly kicking well; both halves will be of value.
