FOX SPORTS **Jackson Hastings set for NRL return with Tigers**

https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/nrl-2021-transfers-contracts-signings-jackson-hastings-wests-tigers-luke-brooks-super-league/news-story/95c5e5fcefc240b46640dcc8278ae742

Jackson Hastings is set to return to the NRL with the Wests Tigers expected to sign the Super League playmaker on a two-year deal.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports a formal announcement could be made within the next 48 hours, with Hastings tipped to join the club next season.

Wigan are reported to be firm on not releasing Hastings before the end of the season at this stage.

His arrival would provide cover off the bench as a utility with Billy Walters reportedly looking at moving to the Broncos at the end of the year alongside father and coach Kevin.

Meanwhile, Moses Mbye is also expected to depart the club.

Hastings played 47 games during his stints at the Roosters and Manly and has previously declared his hope to return to the NRL one day.

Hastings was linked to the Tigers back in March, with the Sydney Morning Herald reporting at the time that coach Michael Maguire had met with the former NRL playmaker’s representatives.

“Wests Tigers they want Jackson Hastings at the club immediately,” Michael Chammas told Nine News at the time.

“They met with Hastings manager today, and are hopeful of getting a release from his deal with Wigan in the Super League to join the club this season.”

Chammas did though also clarify that this “is not a reflection of their faith in Luke Brooks” but conceded “pressure is mounting after a disappointing start to the year.”

The Tigers’ plan for the 2019 Man of Steel winner though reportedly centred around him playing lock as opposed to halfback.

Hastings denied the report, taking to social media to post: “Don’t believe everything you read.”

However, the noise around a return to the NRL does not go away.

Neither does pressure surrounding the Tigers to produce results after just one win through six rounds to start the season.

Maguire’s men were much-improved in a heartbreaking loss to the Rabbitohs on the weekend.

Brooks spoke to reporters after the match and declared the club is backing him despite reports he could be moved on before his contract wraps up at the end of 2023.

“They have spoken to me plenty of times,” Brooks said to media, per NRL.com.

“I guess that’s good for me that they’re still backing me.

“I want to be here, I want to be successful at the Tigers.”

Brooks currently has five try assists and just as many linebreak assists while averaging 229 kicking metres and 44 running metres.

Not a fan of Hastings.

But then again, not a fan of the 17 we have turning out each week either.

(See what this club does to you, after 50 years turns you into a Negative Nellie)

SMH **Hastings agrees to two-year deal with Wests Tigers**

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/hastings-agrees-to-two-year-deal-with-wests-tigers-20210419-p57kcx.html

Jackson Hastings is set to sign a two-year deal to join Wests Tigers next season.

Sources with knowledge of negotiations expect a formal announcement within the next 48 hours as the clubs finalise the paperwork that will ensure Hastings' return to the NRL after three years in the UK Super League.

As reported by the Herald last month, the Wests Tigers reached out to Hastings’ manager in the hope of luring him back to Australia immediately.

Wigan insist Hastings will not be released before the end of the season, but the Tigers are privately hoping things change in the coming months and might be able to add the 25-year-old to their roster.

The Tigers have close to $600,000 to spend on this year’s salary cap, which has largely been cleared by the departure of Josh Reynolds to the Super League and Harry Grant’s return to Melbourne.

The Tigers left money aside in case Cameron Smith opted to continue playing with the Storm and triggered a clause in Grant’s contract that would have allowed him to sign with a rival club.

Hastings' signature will provide the Tigers with a utility option to cover for the expected departure of Billy Walters to link with his dad Kevin at the Brisbane Broncos.

Former skipper Moses Mbye has also been granted permission to negotiate with rival clubs for 2022 and has attracted interest from the Cowboys.

The club is publicly backing halfback Luke Brooks, who after five rounds led the NRL in try assists despite the team’s sub-par start to the year. However, the signing of Hastings also provides them cover in the halves if the Brooks-Adam Doueihi combination doesn’t work.

While defence has been the Tigers’ biggest problem, they are desperate to add some attacking flair to complement the likes of Daine Laurie and Luciano Leilua.

The Tigers first met with Hastings’ Australian management team, who also manage Wigan coach Adrian Lam, at the end of last month.

Brooks, who was one of coach Michael Maguire’s first retention decisions when he joined the club, is contracted until the end of 2023. It is understood the halfback is on a contract worth close to $900,000 a season over the next two years.

The Tigers had shown interest in Hastings over the off-season, offering the former Roosters and Manly playmaker a deal for this year, as well as the next two seasons, but it didn’t get off the ground.

Hastings played 47 games across five seasons in the NRL, leaving the Sea Eagles following a public fallout with Daly Cherry-Evans and then Manly coach Trent Barrett after an altercation following a night out at a Gladstone strip club in 2018.

Hastings signed with Salford in 2019, winning the Man of Steel award for the best player in the Super League that year. He joined Wigan last year and has scored 20 tries in two seasons.

I have no idea how recent these figures are.

The Tigers biggest weakness is defence so I would use the best middle defender I could find as a lock.
The Tiger forwards are not making as many meters as the top forwards in the comp so we also need a lock that can make meters as a battering ram to make up for that.

I have no problem with getting Hastings as a backup half or to play lock if in future if we fix our defence and our forwards make a lot more metres.

Based on those numbers, size wise bigger than Cam Murray and Radley who have both revolutionized the small ball playing lock forward. If he brings a similar defensive determination he could be massive for Tigers at lock. Play like a half defend like a forward.

He'll also be very handy depth coverage in halves as well should poor form by Brooks/Doueihi warrant being dropped or if injury occurs.

Or he pushes Brooks out to 14?

This is a great signing . We need a ball playing lock and pressure on the halves. He will be a gun I’m calling it from now.

Be curious to know the minutes our forwards play to produce that compared to the top forwards at the other clubs. But it still highlights a need for a standout forward. Losing Aloiai was a shame for that reason. We developed him to a good point and then he left.

Everytime Brooks is mentioned, his salary gets 100K added to it. Wonder if he'll make it the $1M mark by the time the year ends? 🙂

Its a bit like my mates telling me the same story of how many beers they had one night. Everyt time they tell it, the number just magically keeps creeping up.

Maybe that's why Brooks played ordinary first two rounds - knew he'd get a 100k increase each time. Can't blame him
