Have they forgotten about the bomb?

Alot has been said about the kicking game of the tigers in 2011, and how poor it has been especially in attacking situations.But i cant remember seeing them use the bomb in the last 3 matches i have watched them play? have they forgotten or fail to notice how effective it is in our modern game?? The under21 side hasnt thats for sure, and its so frustrating seeing the younger boys execute on last tackles better then their first grade counterparts. i seriousllly think we need to get back to basics with our fifth tackle options and the bomb is one option they just dont seem to be taking… speak on it
 
panthers came 2nd last yr bcoz of theyre use of the bomb. really dont understand y we dont use it, especially when mitch brown is on the wing - hes great under the high ball!
 
Moltzen can lift it to the heavens - agree it should be used more, particularly when our usual 5th tackle plays arent coming off.

It would be a good option considering there is nothing much else going on in the brains trust…
 
5th tackle options have been useless for the last 2 years I reckon…

We kept scoring tries early in sets and even from our own half last year... that kept us afloat last year and our injuries to those with speed have really killed us!

Kicking coaches aye what a joke they are.
How does a player make the NRL if he can't kick, or needs additional coaching to kick. Surely these guys get to training early or stay late and practice.
Most of our problems with kicking is players not positioning themselves properly to get the time and space they need to get a good kick away also the play before is often poor or sideways and not putting us on the front foot and get that forward momentum you need to get rolling with your kick. Our kicks are mostly rushed and forced, we need to construct our whole set just for our kick so we can get field position and build pressure.
That's why the top teams are where they are because they do these things consistently better than the other sides they may not have so called superstars in every position but they know that possession and position more often than not win games. We don't value either.

agree. our kickers are always too flat
 
When have we ever bombed consistently? We only have one kick and that is the stupid grubber early in the tackle count.

Every other team in the comp scores a few cheap tries from bombs, I can't understand why we don't do the same. There is little skill involved - hoist it to the heavens in one of the corners, and hope for the best. Anything can happen. Other teams bomb the crap out of us, I've never understood why we don't do the same sometimes.
 
Skill is in where it lands, .5 of a metre from the tryline preferable.
We put up a beauty iirc against the Warriors?

thats why soward has such an effective kicking game, coz they pass the ball 20m back to him when its time to kick. only reason we dont kick from deeper in our end is we roll the dice on the last tackle more often than not.
 
That bomb against the Warriors was lucky, Benji hoisted it from deep in their half and Wade Mac took it on their ten metre line. Sure it worked, but it wasn't textbook.

In the current squad farah can put up an acurate cross field kick but thats about it. Marshall can get some height but his radar is generally way off.
We could go back to the days of robert miles launching the ball into the heavens and hoping for the best.

I'm sure a few years ago I read somewhere that sheens doesn't train his teams to score off bombs because it might give the opposition some cheap field position in broken play
 
thanks for all the opinions i was glad to read im not the only one who has realised this…
a few things...
we have plenty of people out wide and in the side capable of catching and scoring off kicks
benji could easilly kick from 20m back from where the balls played FFS he kicked a feild goal from halfway!
and if not benji then robbie or robert louie?
and i rekon if we did start putting afew to the skys it would keep other teams guessing what we are going to do on our fifth tackles rather then being semi predictable atm

We lack chasers and jumpers. Often wondered why Tigers want to grubber kick behind the defensive line when it is becoming old hat. One thing that would concern me is the unreliability of our defense in broken play if the opposition retrieved the ball.
Oh well…....
 
yeh but… the bomb takes all the momentum out of the play ..its up and down so at worst we lose possession but it means our boys comming through have more time and the oppositon have to make their own speed back up... where as these little kicks behind the line seem to give the opposition side more chance to counterattack :bulb:
