Best mates Dane Chisholm and Jacob Miller are enjoying a healthy rivalry in the battle for the Wests Tigers number 7 jersey.
A former Melbourne Storm player, Chisholm is on a one-year deal for 2012 and is locking horns with Tim Moltzen, Miller and fellow new signing Tom Humble to partner Kiwi Test captain Benji Marshall in the halves.
Moltzen may again be used at full-back by Head Coach Tim Sheens after a successful season in the number 1 jersey.
“Jacob and I grew up in Mullumbimby on the far north coast of NSW. We have been best mates for years,’’ Chisholm said.
“It is a good feeling coming to a new club and having a personal challenge with one of your best mates.
“Jacob showed what he can do in first grade earlier this year. There are a couple of positions up for grabs so hopefully I can take one.”
Twenty-one-year-old Chisholm made his NRL debut for the Storm against Canberra this year and showed his utility value by playing on the wing after being a late inclusion.
“I was 18th man and the boys were warming up when Anthony Quinn’s back seized up. Craig Bellamy just grabbed me aside and said I was playing,’’ Chisholm said.
“By the time I got my gear on and got strapped, the team was running out so I didn’t even warm up.
“It was an awesome experience. I was happy with my game. I want to get another taste of first grade. Once you get that taste of the NRL, it makes you train even harder.”
And what can Wests Tigers fans expect from Chisholm at half?
“I see myself as a ball runner and a good support player. My kicking game is pretty solid,’’ he added.
“I’m pretty happy with my ball running but I know I can definitely improve it here at Wests Tigers.”
