Holden Cup: Wests Tigers lose 30-18 to Penrith
Wests Tigers suffered a 30-18 loss to Penrith Panthers at Campbelltown Sports Stadium today in round two of the Holden Cup competition.
Penrith opened the scoring through full-back Kieran Moss. Second-rower Bryce Cartwright converted the try for a 6-0 lead after 7 minutes.
Wests Tigers then had two tryscoring opportunities go begging, the first when centre Nathan Milone was held up over the line. The second saw fellow centre David Nofoaluma lose the ball over the line.
The home side got on the board when half-back Luke Brooks gave a short ball to prop and Captain Kyle Lovett to beat two defenders to score. Five-eighth Matt Mulcahy failed to convert the try for a 6-4 scoreline.
Cartwright converted a cheap penalty conversion right on half-time to give Penrith an 8-4 lead at the break.
2nd Half
Talented winger Delouise Hoeter got Wests Tigers back to 8-all with a nice try not long after half-time. Mulcahy failed to convert the try.
Moss grabbed his second try in the 47th minute for a 12-8 lead. Cartwright converted the try from in front to give Penrith a 14-8 lead after 49 minutes.
Wests Tigers winger Paul Simona got his side back to 14-12 after a nice ball from second-rower Salesi Funaki. Mulcahy failed to convert the try.
Moss grabbed his third try for the Panthers when he showed great pace to get through the defence. Cartwright converted the try for a 20-12 lead.
Moses was at it again for Penrith when he set up Dallin Watene-Zelezniak in the corner for a 24-12 lead after 61 minutes.
Penrith extended their lead to 28-12 with a try under the posts to winger Jarred Wilson. Cartwright converted for a 30-12 scoreline after 71 minutes.
Wests Tigers hit back two minutes later when hooker Nofoa Leapai scooted from dummy half to throw a big dummy to score near the posts. Mulchahy converted for a 30-18 scoreline.
