How bad is this side??

Worst West Tigers team I have seen. When I was following the Magpies they got floggings and wooden spoons but I stayed with them from 1962 til the merger. Difference is, this lot are highly paid professionals. Should be able to perform all the skills well. Coach isn't to be blamed for them failing the basic. Hell, you see better efforts in the park! Only job is to play league. Be interesting if they still had small contracts and win/loss payments!

For far too many of them it is just a "job" a very well paid job. They just put in their time and seem to go into cruise control if things are not going their way.It is a professional sport but some (not all) of our players are pretenders not professional sportsmen.
The weeding out of the weak kneed needs to continue,i want to see players with passion out there even if they dont win at least they tried

It will never come to this but player (and coach for that matter) contract should come with a base salary and the rest bonuses based on perforate and KPI's like a lot of other professions and other leagues like the NFL.

Pretty easy to pick KPI's based on player position, experience, coaching etc etc

It would avoid the whole "just turn up to get my paycheque" mentality and put the onus on performance and personal accountability / responsibility- which his why it would never happen.

Going way back, the players were on $300 a win and $200 a loss. Most of the guys were unskilled in the workforce and poorly paid. They never lacked effort, comraderie and a winning cheque were a great motivator, today they are media stars on rediculous money . The system today allows pretenders to bludge.

Coming from a Joey critic, he has been good the last 2 weeks. Playing for a contract? Possibly. The silver lining is if the club activates his contract for 2022, he’ll be playing for a contract again. Then sign him for a further year, so he’s playing for a contract AGAIN.

Yeah man. Year by year extensions would suit him. Otherwise he just coasts

Are you allowed to not activate an option and resign him on a lower value?

Hope so

Maybe. Not too sure

Unfortunately it would be nearly impossible to implement with the current salary cap. A certain percentage HAS to be used and obviously you can't go over. It wouldn't leave much room for any variation between a good and bad year. You could potentially use it to lift their salary from one year to the next but even then it'd be hard to do.

I think we all need to be realistic about how clubs and coaches are adapting to the new rules . Alot of talk about defence winning matches and really their are only two teams that I can identify that can be happy with their defence - Melbourne and Penrith - and that is because their attack blows every other club out of the water. Parra and Roosters are on the next tier and after that all other teams have been victims to leaking points and inconsistency.
The game between Manly and Warriors yesterday two teams fairly evenly matched was not won on defence. Can guarantee the coaches defensive structures were not successful and what won Manly the game was their ability to score when they had their chances. You have a squad that cant capitalize on their chances with the ball you won't win despite your coach and the defensive structures practised at training.

This is what I was saying in the Brooks thread, Brooks doesn't capitalise on hardly any chances, we muck around set after set on the opposition tryline offering nothing.
My point was a halfback can be a reason you lose even when leaking 34 points.

We are nowhere near good enough at converting field position into points. We were camped inside the Dragon's 20 and only managed three tries. A good side would have scored 30 points, a great side 50.

We are at least 3 yrs away from being a top 8 side, We have to produce or buy at least 5 quality players. That's just a simple fact!

Forget about buying them. Think developing them.

Completely agree with that.it will be a longer process but a more consistent team will come from that.A quick fix is not long lasting
