Hysteria about our bench

I have been wetting myself with laughter at the anti Sheens trust this week, who even though we pulled off an amzing win are out in force death riding the bloke.

It seems the best they can come up with atm is the bench.

Which made me think about the other coaches and their use of the bench.

It was in vogue years ago to play four blokes and rotate them with your tight four, most clubs still do this, but we have only two blokes that rotate with the props,on about a 50/30 ratio, and the other two as back ups,and omigod we arent the only team do this.

The dogs who i assume are coached by a pretty good lad, played Barba for 9 mins and Paea for 20.

The titans actually had three benchies under 20 minutes,Brown 2 mins,Tagatese 14 and Mattews 18.

Now thats Sheens,Moore and Cartwright, who all played a back on their bench and sparingly used others.

Should all these blokes be sacked,or are they onto something.

For the record,I have no problem with our backrow playing 80 mins or close to it,and playing our best two props for as long as possible.

bulldogs lost , titans and tigers nearly lost

still makes no sense to carry a wing - 3/4 on the bench incase of an injury we have 3 players in our squad of 17 that can cover the centre position if an outside back goes down, id rather 10-15 minutes from another prop or back rower then 5 token minutes at the end of the game for a winger

and for the record just because other coaches do it doesnt make it right or less dumb

Helloooooo Simon . . . .

You are right.

But what I am saying is in my opinion, the bench is not being picked on Merit. Do you agree?

Bwahahahahahaha!!!!!

So what ur saying is that 2/3 of coached that employed this style won,and the other team scored more tries than its opposition but couldnt kick a goal and therefore lost, ruining what should have been a 100% win ratio for this type of bench useage, lol!!

simon, why start a thread and talk commonsense?

I know…..... 😱pen_mouth:

Shame I feel I have to defend the coach when we should be talking about our great win,and our chances for this week, but the deluge of neegativity is beyond belief!!!! :deadhorse:

I guess I just wanted to show that some very good coaches use the same style as Sheensie.

Simon,

Do you agree the bench is not being picked on Merit.

Exactly, when our props went off we struggled and lost our way. Bad idea to take them both off at the same time for one thing, but I would of prefered a prop ready to keep us going against a monster pack like Manly instead of a winger on the bench that came on only 6 minutes. Yeh yeh he was there in case Lote cramped up but as stated already a reshuffle could of happen in that instance anyway and someone on the team could of covered. That way we still can use the bench more effectively. Keeping a winger on the bench just in case seemed like a waste. We needed muscle out there.

so 2 out of the other 14 coaches use this theory and they won one and lost one against the 2 of the worst teams in the comp and you are spruking this stat up?

Hahaha do you even watch the games…Knights while rated poorly....played awesome....Warriors had the Titans but let it fade.....

I don't know ....but in the NRL any team can beat any team on the day.....

It's consistancy that's important....

Simon is spot on...no surprise he identified Sheens bench policy....

Bug…..the bench is about a certain balance.

As I explained in the thread opener,Sheens atm is picking 2 blokes to rotate with the props for about half an hour and one to cover injuries to the backs and forwards.

To make it simpler.......these are most probably NOT the 14,15 16 or 17th best players at the club, but have been chosen as they are the most suitable for the roles Sheensie has in mind.

My point is….....two excellent coaches, highly regarded and who took their respective sides to the top 4 last year use their bench in a similar fashion to Sheens.

ie.....they rely heavily on their top 13,and use 2 others for medium amounts of game time.

I think our team looks good atm. I think Gower probably deserves a go but I have no problems with Fitzy being there atm.

I do think we need our bench props to give us some more impact because Fulton isn't good at getting us going forward. Ellis and Heighno can definitely help us get going though.

Sheens in the past has made poor selection decisions - Morris killed us yet he was a good player. I think posters are simply criticising him because of poor past decisions.

As for the win last week - it was awesome.

I guess another point Im trying to make is that winning teams use 15 players and it really doesnt make too much difference to these teams who the 16 and 17 are,yet knickers are getting twisted into one almighty knot over this issue. :astonished:

I havent commented on our bench all week, but one thing i know is that when Galloway and Gibbs went off we got dominated. Now i'd expect that would happen to most sides when there best front rowers go off, and Payten coming back will help, but i do think Sheens needs to not change both front rowers at the same time. Gibbs is well known to be one of the fittest front rowers in the game, i have no doubt he can play the first 30 minutes. He often looks stuffed, but thats just his persona, the guy is very fit.

When Payten comes back, i'd change Galloway for Payten after 20mins, give him 10 mins rest then put him back on for Gibbs at the 30 minute mark. I wouldnt use Cayless until the 2nd half, thats how important i feel it is to have Gibbs, Galloway and Payten playing the bulk of the game.

As for the rest of the bench, well i find it hard to analyse because at the moment we have 3 backrowers who play close to 80 minutes, but if i had my way, i wouldnt have Fulton and Heighno both starting. I feel, all 3 current backrowers are great workhorses, and we'd be better suited having a backrower who offers more impact. I'd like to see Ellis and Mataka start in the backrow with Fulton at lock. That can allow Heighno to come off the bench and rotate around the 3 as he can play left side, right side and up the middle, allowing all 3 to have a rest at some stage if needed.

knights will finish in the bottom 4 warriors will fight out the spoon with cronulla

wait till we lose then we'll so how many of you are happy with fitzhenry in the starting 17\. we still are not 100% that he is the wing on Sunday.

You're probably wasting your time with posts like this Simon. We could win the comp undefeated and some people on this forum would blame Sheens for the for and against not being good enough…
