Hysteria about our bench

if you look at the top teams eg melbourne, dragons, parra and dogs their bench carry a man who can play hooker or in the halves. ideally at full strength a tigers bench will have two props a second rower and a utility. the best utility at the club is probably fulton but i would chuck ayshford into that role.

the bench could look like this come mid season and no reason for complaints imo

ayshford
cayless
payten
dwyer/mataka/fifita/moors. The luxury though that we are fortunate enough to have 3 good 80 minute backrowers and an 80 minute hooker.

Only reason i can see this happening is if Beau moves into the centres. Ayshford will not stay in the centres for the rest of his career unless he gains speed.

although i doubt this will happen i would love to see it

i can see your point simon.
didn't bennett play matty head on the bench alot last year?
the way sheens is playing our forwards, putting another on our bench really is wasting a spot.
i can see why sheens wants fitzy on the bench because an injury to a back or farah makes the replacement a pretty easy decision.
if one of our halves is injured moltz can move to the halves with ryan moving to fullback (when not suspended) and fitzy to the wing.
all the combos work easy if someone is injured in our backs.
the same goes for our pack if there is an injury.it is easily covered.

what we really need is better play from our bench props.
when payten comes back i think our pack will look alot better.his work in defense is a little under rated.

if people don't want fitzy there and prefer another back, that is fine, but if you want another forward i think you are not looking at how many minutes he wants his starters to play.
under his formula a back makes sense, another forward doesn't.

if we had props who could do the job on the bench the last 3 years this extra back talk would not be an issue.

That's right Bon. With Fitzy being able to cover hooker, 5/8th, lock, fullback, centre, wing now, an injury to any of the key positions, Fitzy can slot straight in with the first grade experience under his belt and know what is required to be done to plug the hole without any major reshuffle of the squad to maintain the gameplan. Last week was an example of this.
Last year's crucial clash against Parramatta saw Sheens caught out due to unfortunate injuries to both wingers and the red panic button was hit with major reshuffling which saw the gameplan fall apart.
Sheens won't be caught out again. Masterstroke..

no my opinion is a little different.
the beauty of our backline is the versatility we have because we play 3 halves.
we don't need someone to play 5 roles.
i think the hooker position is where fitzy is getting the nod along with his experience in a sheens backline on the wing.

any player can play any position, doesnt mean they do it well, this post is directed at you CT, i mean seriously when has fitzy ever played lock?

still need impact of the bench ,which we seemed to really lack
early rounds are just about winning anyways as long as sheens doesnt do this for the whole year its ok

I have been wetting myself with laughter at the anti Sheens trust this week, who even though we pulled off an amzing win are out in force death riding the bloke.

It seems the best they can come up with atm is the bench.

Which made me think about the other coaches and their use of the bench.

It was in vogue years ago to play four blokes and rotate them with your tight four, most clubs still do this, but we have only two blokes that rotate with the props,on about a 50/30 ratio, and the other two as back ups,and omigod we arent the only team do this.

The dogs who i assume are coached by a pretty good lad, played Barba for 9 mins and Paea for 20.

The titans actually had three benchies under 20 minutes,Brown 2 mins,Tagatese 14 and Mattews 18.

Now thats Sheens,Moore and Cartwright, who all played a back on their bench and sparingly used others.

Should all these blokes be sacked,or are they onto something.

For the record,I have no problem with our backrow playing 80 mins or close to it,and playing our best two props for as long as possible.

Simon i pose this question, if WT re-sign Tim Sheens in the next month and we fail to me the finals again, would you be happy to sit out the rest of his career waiting for another finals birth getting hopes up every year? Yes, he did get us a premiership, and im thankful for that, but that was 5 years ago and have failed to make the finals each and every year since. Now sure people are going to say if he wins it this year it would be a good move on behalf of the club, but to re-sign him before he does isn't a option. There is so many reasons so many fans have the pressure on him, the whole half/five-eight rubbish last year benji is our long term 7 (failed he is back at 6), morris was signed as a utility player (rubbish he was signed to replace prince another failure), the fans calling for benji to go back to 6 from 7 (1 solid game by benji and the so called fans dont no what there talking about (ummm benji is back in 6 did we all forget that)). This is nothing personal against Tim Sheens, but since 2005 he has failed miserably, he has done his job to help rebuild this club, i just feel its someone else's time to take over and turn this into a super club, not just an average club.

How could anyone argue with that. They will, but it wont have any substance because your post can not be proved wrong.

Yes!!!

Weve seen Noyce go so far and then someone like Humphreys comes in and takes it to the next level.

Sheens position is no different, except for the fact that its ultimately his own decision as no one in out club has the balls to do otherwise.
