Indigenous All Stars do not sing the National Anthem

This is a tough one isn't it. I think we need to recognise Indigenous culture and Indigenous people's feelings. Maybe we should change the flag and the anthem. Personally I prefer the Aboriginal flag and our Anthem doesn't fill me nostalgic pride.

My concern is that that there are always complaints about being unfairly treated and at some point people (not just Indigenous people) have to realise that they are lucky to be living in Australia and the flag or the Anthem changing aren't going to suddenly make their lives perfect.

While I agree with your sentiment, I dont think a people who have been here for 60000 years would see that statement the same way.

60,000 or one year - still immigrants.

I think a minority of people have to big a voice - Maybe the Greeks and Italians or maybe the Asians or Middle Eastern minorities would like just as big a say.

Andrew Fifita is the typical focal point here - "I am Lebanese, I am Samoan, I am Australian, I am Aboriginal" What is he??????

Obviously whatever he wants to be (like many others) when it suits him.

Oh! and by the way - I love the Anthem and object totally using the Aboriginal flay as the flag of Australia - green and gold in some form for me.

Well Cochise . . . if they came across the seas 60000 years ago, they are still immigrants.
So you are factually incorrect, regardless of what you think.
What a stupid argument.

Here is the thing - the Aborigines came to Australia and destroyed a whole bunch of animals. They killed off the mega fauna. They did this because they are human and that is how we role. Living today in modern Australia they are much much better off than their ancestors who as Russel states were still immigrants and they weren't some perfect human beings living in Utopia.

Anyway - I'm cool with changing the flag and the Anthem but the point remains that at some point the complaints have to stop and you have to be happy and content with the life you have today.

I saw Ben Simmons wearing green and gold shoes in the NBA all stars game where he was representing the world. Australia is now a much more diverse country in relation to our ethnic makeup that what it was when I grew up. Aborigines make up less than 5% of our population and most of those would be part aborigine and part something else.

I'm all for recognising our Aboriginal culture and heritage but at some point the issue has to be dropped.

They were the original inhabitants of this land.

Reparation needs to be made before an issue can be dropped.

Because the white government did not believe in indigenous culture and wanted them to become good christians. They thought putting them in religious institutions was a better option.

I will also state that a lot of the injustices are still very fresh for indigenous people with people still alive that suffered through them.

I remember reading archaeology evidence saying the aboriginals actually were not being the original inhabitants of this land. How they moved down through Asia and wiped out the people that were here before them.

Fwiw though, it's not the question of how people got here thousands (or hundreds) of years ago that is the issue, more getting on with it now. We are Australia now, a mix of many cultures, including aboriginal, european, asia, and our own that we are constantly evolving. The Anthem should be reflecting that, and though it doesn't in words, the citing of it should - so for me no excuse in not joining in.

Edit: I read this a decade or two ago, and the scientific opinion now seems to be that the above statement is wrong and that aboriginal people actually were the first here. Doesn't change much, however it happened, we need to look at the now.

That being said, wasn't this game Indigenous vs NRL stars? Not an Aussie team, not an Aussie national representation. So not needing the anthem for this occasion.

So what?

What about the tribes in Germania - thrashed within an inch of their lives by the Romans and then taken over by someone else (other countries have the same story).

Why don't we have a small minority in Germany for example stating they are the traditional owners of Germany and they want thanks for people using their land and all types of other special privileges.

I'll tell you why - because it is ridiculous.

When you are a beaten people - you join the victors and get on with life.

Different case in NZ - n the Maori were not beaten.

I'd like to know how the issue can be solved and when it will be dropped. What is it going to take:-

1\. Change Australia day to another day
2\. Change Flag
3\. Change Anthem

Is that enough ? If these changes occur will there then be additional demands. I think Aboriginal people need to start recognising that Australia is changed from what it was 300 years ago. The world has changed. Your life isn't about living in a past that is long gone.

I have no problems with changing those three issues that we currently have and maybe more but at some point we have to move on.

I think people don't understand human history at all. It's not even about being a beaten people. That doesn't cut it to me. History is history. This is the country we live in today. It's a good freaken country.

My take is that this is just about people looking to find something to complain about and it will never end.

As you state the history of human beings consists of stuff like what happened to Aborigines happening and even worse in plenty of areas. I'd put money on it that certain Aboriginal tribes completely wiped out other Aboriginal tribes.

Is that also the reason that children were routinely taken off single mothers and adopted out?
