Individual Player Numbers

s based on position.

The idea was put forward at a meeting of club bosses in Sydney on Tuesday by Sydney Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce and was received warmly by the other clubs.

Noyce said it was time rugby league followed the lead of AFL and cricket and allowed fans to buy replica shirts with the name and numbers of their favourite player on the back.

"It allows fans to identify with a favourite player when they are at the game and when they purchase a jersey," Noyce said.

"The way positions are today the numbers do not really reflect where people actually play and there is a better chance for people to better identify their favourite player.

"There are only two sports that retain numbers based on position and it is time we moved on."

The plan also received tentative support from NRL CEO David Gallop, who admitted although the idea would fly in the face of tradition, it was something that would be looked into.

"All of that stuff is part of the system used in AFL and cricket and there has been a push for it today and we will go away and look at it," Gallop said.

Stupid idea. It didn't work during SuperLeague and we should keep it as it is.

ITs a good change to see a team line-up with conventional numbering system. For the casual observer at least you can tell what position a player is.

An idea thought up by crayon weilding spastics

This has to be the stooooopidest thing I have ever heard.

How is it going to be easier to identify a player with no74 on his back???

Im pretty sure kids that love Bunji know he wears number 6,and because of this 6 know basically where he is playing.

This would confuse everyone, especially the younguns.

Anyone else remember when they numbered the three grades 1-17,18-35 and so on.

I had no idea who play where…it was duuuuuuuuumbest!!

Just read the article on the Tele website.

No shock that this ground breaking pointless thought was bought to us all by S. Noyce

The very same man that was going to turn us into the Manchester United of Rugby League

Knobhead…

This idea really should cure the salary cap issue, resolve player scheduling and injury management. Always good to see strong leadership at a time when the game is in crisis. Bravo!

Why is it such a bad idea? In terms of marketing for the clubs, this could lead to HUGE amounts of money from merchandise sales. You sell jerseys with Number "X" on the back, with "Marshall", "Farah" or "Tuqiri" above, and it'll make a bucketload of cash!

Soccer is a prime example of this and it's evident whenever a club signs a big name…

I don't see why it matters to have the numbers reflect the position anymore... especially given sides play the game so differently to how it's been traditionally played.

I think it's a great idea and any idea which leads to the clubs directly making money and not relying on large tv deals and leagues clubs is a positive imo.

The majority of supporter jerseys are not numbered. This is not because a player may change number etc but moreover because fans tend to support the club over and above any one player.

Also I fail to see apart from a small initial spike how this would increase jersey sales

Mate the amoun t of kids wearing Tigers jerseys with a dodgy 6 put on the back with Marshall written across the top is outstanding… Surely you've seent this at games?

This would be something that wouldn't attract sales from you or me smeg, but from kids who idolise players such as Benji... official jersey's maked accordingly would sell like hotcakes imo

The players who the kids will want on their jersey already play with the same number pretty much every week. Benji in 6, Lockyer in 6, Thurston in 7, Slater in 1 etc. Most sport stores will put them on the back for you.

Just "doing it because everyone else does" isn't going to make you "bucketloads of cash." Is there a direct correlation with an increase in Sheffield Shield merchandise sold since they put numbers on the back of each players white shirts and Weet Bix on the front?

I believe the proposal also includes having the players name across the back of the jersey as well…

So if the sports stores do it... and make money from it... why shouldn't the club?

So we'd have a team list of

1- Ryan
36- Tuquiri
3 -Lawrence
4- Ayshford
5 -Tuiaki
88- Marshall
666- Moltzen
00 - Gibbs
48 Farah
10 Kilo
11 Heghno
12 Ellis
13 Fulton

03 -Daniella
0 -Brown
16-Flanagan
17-Moors

I like the idea of a player name.

However that may be dificult the way modern jerseys are a bit of a billboard
