Do we want to win Round 1???
Of course we do. Round 1 is here and we need to win!!! But is it life or death if we win this week?
Like the rest of you I want to win every game. However based on last year, Round 1 results do not guarantee success for the year. In fact it proved the opposite. 3 of the teams in the 2011 preliminary finals lost their opening game of the season (Manly, Warriors & Brisbane).
A few of the main results for Round 1, 2011;
* Parramatta beat the Warriors in NZ and was supposed to have found a new mental toughness under Stephen Kearney. They struggled to win games after this and just escaped the spoon, while the Warriors had a dream run all the way to Grand Final day.
*Canberra killed the Sharks but could barely win another game, even at home and came 15th. Cronulla even finished higher on the ladder and beat the defending Premiers the next weekend.
*The Roosters beat Souths. After this they became a rabble & Souths just missed the 8.
*The Cowboys beat Brisbane at Suncorp. The young Broncos turned it around and had a great year.
*And of course we lost to the Dogs. After starting off strongly the Dogs fell in a heap and even sacked their coach before the end of the season.
Despite this I still want to win by 50!!! However win, lose or draw, Round 1 is not always the best indicator of success for the remainder of the year. We have had a good record winning Round 1 over the years, however our worst first game performance was in 2005.
It is a very long season, especially for us supporters of the Wests Tigers who are used to the ups and downs (and we get that in each game).
