Is the tide turning?

I love how some think it's perfectly OK and acceptable that we start the season so slowly.

This was the year that things were supposed to change.

just in regards to people pointing out that we've won three in a row… lets remember that these 3 wins have been against the worst 3 teams in the comp: panthers, eels & titans. Im not trying to be negative, all im saying is that i dont think we have turned the corner yet in terms of playing well enough to compete with the top sides. we can continue to turn that corner this week by beating a fullstrength warriors side without farah

I'm a Sheens fan. But… his bench selections and selection players out of their best positions, while refusing to name a half back and stick with a combination are not doing the players or the team any favours.

And this half back denial is the difference between the team in the last couple of years and this year - it will be much harder to reproduce a late season run while this is happening.

He has my support for this season because a coach change mid season would not work (and there is a lack of alternative), but he must live or die at seasons end with such selections. Hopefully if it doesn't work we will still have a halfback at the club who is worth selecting.

And again, Penriff were decimated by injury so it would have been unacceptable if we didn't win by how much we did; Eels are woefully out of form, had their halfback sent back to NSW cup and still only lost to us by one point; and the Titans had a second string halves combo, if it weren't for Rankin we'd have lost that game too.

Too me we just seem stale. We seem like a pub team who shows up with the same blokes each year, end up getting beat in the finals and go ah bad luck fellas lets try again next year.
This isn't about whether Sheens is a good or bad coach. Personally I just believe he's been here for too long and the entire club could use a breath of fresh air starting at the top. Sheens has been great for us but I think this should be his last contract…

I'm much less pro-Sheens than I was but my change of heart is very little to do with team selection. I really don't have a strong enough view on any of the available half back options, for instance (I think all three of Moltzen, Humble and Miller have distinct question marks over them) so while I wish he'd had a plan and stuck to it rather than chopping and changing all the time I don't think he could have done drastically better with the cards he's been dealt.

My issue is tactics, or lack thereor. The Raiders game was the one that did it for me: in recent times when we've been playing badly - especially in defence - we've resorted to fast line speed, up and in, hit the ruck hard and pressure the playmakers. Fair enough, in theory, against a Raiders side with a big pack and question marks out wide. Yet the Raiders absolutely killed us first half by shifting wide early and going round the edge of our defence before it could spread. Then second half we came out playing exactly the same way! Getting out-thought by David Furner is not my idea of tactical genius.

To be fair we have largely defended better since the horror back to back showings against the Raiders and Dragons. But the attack has been misfiring all season and it's not as if we've got all new combinations in there. We don't seem to be able to put backs into space at all. You can put this down to a number of things, including Marshall, Lawrence, Ayshford and Blair's lack of form, Ellis and Tedesco's injuries, The Half Back Problem and various others. But I'm also convinced a decent-sized contributor is coaching. Why do we seem to have run out of ideas?

Again, and example: against Brisbane the first try we conceded followed a big line break up the middle (Moltzen or Humble from full back I think). When the tackle was finally made after a 50 metre break, instead of fighting for a quick play the ball our player ended up having to stay down while he waited for his support. Then we rushed the play (even though the defence was already re-set thanks to our sluggish support), we turned the ball over and Brisbane went straight up the other end and scored. That, to my mind, is just bad organisation and bad decision making - and a lot of that must come down to coaching.

Anyway that's my 2c. I don't want to join in Sheens bashing and, as I say, my concerns aren't to do with whether or not he picks one or other of the NYC team ahead of whatever first grader. It's the tactics on the field.

We lost the two best exponents of quick line speed in defence - Gibbs & Payten.

I love how some people think making the eight is a successful season.

That's how Souths think.

Winning the Charity Shield is a successful season for Souffs.

Sure. So why are we still trying to use the tactic when we don't have the players to implement it properly?

It's getting harder and harder to give him my support.Team selection these day is so disappointing .He does seem to have favourites.

Maybe do what other clubs are doing make him coaching director, that takes away the pressure of hands on coach, replacement well there's many options Steve Georgalis,Royce Simmoms,Steve Folkes all have had experience & under Tim's guidance any one of these would do the job & put some freshness back in the side,

Have I gone back in time?????

This happens EVERY. GOD DAMN. YEAR. Mid season, we hate Sheens.

I think it's because some people go off their meds in autumn thinking they are alright. It only takes a few losses for them to revert.

We have yet to just "make the 8" though. We have arguably the best records in the finals. We've played finals footy 3 times. All 3 years we've been in the top 4, all 3 years we were alot of people's favorites for the comp, and in all 3 years we either lost very close to the end of the match or won the premiership.

For the Tigers to make the 8 IS successful given we are generally successful in the finals. When we have a season where we sneak in and get embarrassed (which won't happen this year, guarantee you), then you might have a point.
