Israel Folau and the Eels salary cap

Apparently the Eels have $110K left on their salary cap but Cap Auditor Ian Schubert has assessed him at $400K. Does anyone know why this matters? Why can't the Eels just pay him $100K this year and $700K next year? We've had back-ended contracts before. If the Eels want him that bad surely they can get him to agree to this - he must have some AFL cash left over to see him through the year.

I couldn't care less whether he signs with the Eels or not, but how many NRL clubs still have $400K available under the cap? Isn't the Cap Auditor forcing him to go to Japan or France to play RU?

The NRL are cutting back on backloading contracts and rightly so after the St George affair with Mark Gasnier….

The ARLC have also placed a greater focus on ensuring Clubs operate within their means, so using the Salary Cap Auditor looks to be a starting point.

There will be clubs who have Cap Space, but may have exhausted all 3rd Party Options... Izzy wont be earning $400k, he will be alot higher than that!

It is a difficult situation.

Folau is the sort of player we WANT to be playing NRL. But by the same token, we can't really let one club bend the rules to accommodate him. It just isn't fair.

I don't think Folau has ever been chasing the money for his personal benefit. Everyone should be aware that he supports his whole family and gets put through the ringer by the mormon church.

This is rubbish from Schubert. Why the hell is he valued at 400k? Why is he the only player in the NRL with an assessed value and where does he pull the figure from? He has spent 2 years out of the game and he is being valued at a price higher than probably 90% of players in the game.

If they want to cut down on back ended deals just make a rule that a player must recieve at least x% of their total contractual payment each year in a deal lasting y years. For example he must earn 25% of their total contractual payout in both years of a 2 year deal, rather than this notional value garbage. Did the Dragons have to pay a minimum value when Dell came back? Did we have to do so with Lote? Titans with Mat Rogers? Will Schubert let SBW take a 50% pay cut to bring Cooper to the Roosters? Just another example of Schubert using his 'discretion' to disadvantage a smaller team to make it look like he is actually doing something.

I think I might have worked it out: perhaps the Eels submitted a deal to Schubert which contained various 3rd Party deals and other benefits but only 110K in cash and felt that the deal should be legitimate in terms of salary cap rules. Perhaps Schubert has decided that some of the benefits or 3rd Party deals aren't exempt and he values the contract at $400K of the salary cap.

What I am saying is that Schubert maybe hasn't assessed Folau at $400K but he has assessed the deal Parra put forward as being $400K under salary cap rules.

If it is true that Jennings is worth $600K don't you think that $400K is a fair assessment for Folau?

I would love to see us dump Tuqiri and pay Folau $400K. The issue here isn't how much he is worth. The issue is why the salary cap auditor applies an "assessed value" to any contract if the player is happy to take less on a back-ended deal.

Any club that signs Folau will have to backend his contract in a big way so they would have to sign him on a long term deal to spread the pain out as far as possible

Can't imagine that any club , who wasn't doing 3rd party deals (which you would think they have used all of as well) would have 400 k spare in their cap at this stage of the season

Just my opinion though

Jennings is getting paid 600k because someone at Penrith let him hold the club to ransom when he re-signed. There is a reason Gus and co are trying to get rid of him - he is on massive overs.

No the Eels should not be allowed to bend the rules! A salary cap is a salary cap and if they can't afford him but they so desperately want him, then cull your playing roster to make him fit under the salary cap!
If that's not an option for the Eels then tough luck he goes somewhere where they can afford him!!
This kind of 'rule bending' could open the flood gates to much bigger chaos and backlash now and in the future for the NRL, the only option they have is to deny the application!
