Jason Cayless

He just struck me as…. well..... soft on the field.

Now, i'm no footballer, but call me crazy, I thought I was going crazy but he looked like he was flinching in a really wimpy way when he made hit ups as opposed to the general hard work our forwards do. I mean, watching fifita hit up vs cayless is like chalk and cheese......

I rate Cayless in the past but unfortunately injuries and age have caught up with him. Let him go to free up money to give pay increases to Fifita, Moors and Dwyer. Or use the money to buy Lima off the Storm

yeah, I agree. let him go…up those others contracts. We gave it a shot. Both parties will agree it's for the best.

We gave the bloke a second chance and it didn't work out. No fault in that

.."Didnt work out"applies to most of our off season buys..Tuamata,Cayless,Brown,Tupou,Fitzhenry..& the jury is still out on Flanagan,Daniella,Fulton & Moors as to whether they make any significant contribution this season .Most wont.
…And even if they do,weve got others in lower grades who probably cld have done better.
Im all for buying proven players like Tuquiri to plug obvious gaps in our line-up,& utilising promising juniors /JBC players which we have in spades at the moment, rather than buying other teams reserve grader discards & hoping we can magically turn them around.
We very ,very rarely do under the current coaching regime

You don't think Fulton has had a significant contribution to the team? … he was 18th man for City, so people are noticing his good form. You don't think Flanagan's gone well coming here after only 10 first grade games in the ESL? You don't think Moors has finally hit some good form the last 6 weeks and going well as an extra prop off the bench? You don't think Daniela has done a good job covering centre where we had an injury?

Mate... come on

I agree the jury is still out on Brown who has had very limited chance to show his use, and when he has, I don't think he's lived up to the hype some have given him. Tupou, well, can't judge him yet. Fitzy has been discussed to the nth degree. Cayless .. don't know what's going on there. Taumata, well, I wish we had given him a shot in FG during those four weeks where both Moltz and Lui were out.

My point is there are others who cld do better than either Fulton or Flanagan..Dwyer for one,Gower for another, any one of 3 centres in JBC for Daniella (who has had just one good game in 1sts,& looks more brittle as anyone in defence tbd)…Moors is arguably the sole exception, but we need some beef upfront so his buy makes some sense,& he has delivered in recent weeks.
Id swap all of them for one good halfback & another big prop

Yes, Dwyer's been good, hence why he's still in the team. Sheens has given reserve graders a go, and if they do well, they maintain their spot. Fifita has been a revelation for the club and is performing week in week out. He had a great debut and has continued that form since. Can't say the same for guys like Al Schirnack, who was given multiple chances last year after apparently being one of the best for BRET but he didnt cut it IMO.

Last point on subject of our dud buys…current refs interpretations mean no team can afford more than one lightweight forward(ie under 100kg) in the pack these days, particularly when youve got a small hooker like we have(& justifiably so).
Heinington is our man,& again justifiably so.And a 80 minute player.
When u add a Fulton and/or a Flanagan to this mix, with we lose a chunk of our go forward.Dont see too many small forwards in either SOO pack(apart from no 9s)..its all about getting over advantage line,& allowing space for backs to do their stuff, plus blocking the middle of the field in defence.
Size is key in todays game, particularly upfront
And no,Shirmack didnt make any impression. But when yr amongst the leaders in two JBC teams,& Toyata Cup,youve got options other than buying reserve grade discards from teams that finished below us,or retrieving our marginal ex-1st graders from UK who couldnt make it there but remain favorites in our nostalgic coach's eyes

BTW, BRET and the Magpies are in the State Cup, not the Jim Beam Cup …

I understand where you're coming from in regards to Fulton and Flanagan and I'm very interested to see how Sheens plays them in the coming weeks. You'd think that Payten will head to the ESL for his super pay check at the end of this year or next when his contract is up, leaving room for guys like Dwyer and Fifita to be regular first graders. The way we're blooding them at the moment usually works very well and we should see them be very settled consistent footballers next year.
