Joel Reddy to learn from Sheens

JOEL Reddy is ready, willing and able to restart his career under the guidance of Australian coach Tim Sheens and stake his claim for a starting spot at the Wests Tigers following an injury ravaged 2011.

After seven years with Parramatta, Reddy is looking for longevity in the game of rugby league and hoping a change of scenery will compliment his wishes.

“I really enjoyed my time at Parramatta but I think I can extend my career under Tim Sheens,” Reddy said.

“I’ve still got a lot to learn and he’s a very smart coach.

“It’s going to be good to have an experienced coach, I think that sort of suits my style a bit more.

“The skill levels very high here and that suits how I play so I’m looking forward to playing that style of footy.”

With Reddy’s steel in defence a major drawcard for the Tigers, Reddy says he is prepared to take on whatever role the team needs in order to make the side.

“I enjoy my defence so I think that was one thing Tim was looking at when he bought me,” he said.

“I’m ready to do the hard work, the tough stuff and leave the fancy stuff to Benji (Marshall).”

He made his City Origin debut in 2010, but the year ended on a sour note for Reddy - requiring a shoulder reconstruction - while this season he missed almost the entire year through a pectoral injury.

Penning a two-year deal with the Wests Tigers, Reddy is making like his last name and prepared to attack the new year after completing all of his rehabilitation.

While down about his injury he kept motivated with the allure of playing alongside Marshall and Robbie Farah all the motivation he needed.

“It was pretty tough but when the Tigers came knocking I knew they were a really good club,” he said.

“It’s a very good team they’ve got here. I can’t just walk into the team and its going to be a tough grind getting in there.

“Some of the players they’ve got here I’ll definitely learn a lot (from).

“At the moment I’m just focused on learning as much as I can and getting as fit and strong as I can before Christmas and then the footy side will come into it.”

While Reddy has become accustomed with the centres, Blake Ayshford and Chris Lawrence have all but secured their spots in the side for next season.

The 26-year-old says he is willing to play wherever Sheens needs him - fullback, winger, back row or centre.

“It really doesn’t bother me,” Reddy said after naming the positions.

“I just want to be a part of the team, in the 17 somewhere and I’d be happy with that.”

Fullback looms as the most likely option for Reddy with Wade McKinnon bound for England and Tim Moltzen likely to move into the halves to replace Robert Lui.

A lot of these signings 'recycled or tried players' haven't worked out for us in the past….but I have a good feeling about Reddy.

I have always admired his play. He is very honest and as long as he is prepared to work hard he has a role to play for sure. Nice interchange option at worst. His signing may spell an end to criticisms of Sheens' use of the bench.

Will be a very good bench player covering injuries in the backs and forwards.

Very solid in defence and can find the try line.

reddy is the next best thing to a marquee signing. cant see him not being in the 17 somewhere. lets hope his injuries are behind him.

When you consider Reddy covered for the gross failure of Eric Grothe Junior for many years I am excited to see what he can do with us

Has a great attitude when it comes to training as well. Hopefully he'll be a good mentor to some of the younger players.

but it also has in the past worked well for us to

and specially Parra Players

Most notably

Brett Hodgson.. never really did anything after being made to look like a rag doll in Origin by Tallis. came to us.. the rest is history
Pat Richards. Broken down a few times, broke his leg at Parra. Came here and first game broke his leg again.. once again the rest is history.

Reddy has in my opinion come across as a no-nonsense footballer, which is what I think could work here at the Tigers. This would complement the flamboyance of Marshall and Farah, and only add to the Wests Tigers dynamic team structure for 2012.

Agree with all of the above - a very astute buy and I really like that he is a consistently great defender. We've been needing someone like that in the backline for some time.

Am very excited to have him on board, but I do wonder where this leaves Brown. The article stated that the Center positions speak for themselves so I assume Brown and Reddy fight it out for the fullback position. Otherwise they fight it out for a bench spot, but if Reddy can cover the forwards too then that will make it very hard for Brown which is a shame.

However it all spells great depth for the club!

Quite happy with the signing of Reddy, he's tall, has decent size, decent pace and knows how to tackle, plus the bloke goes about his business very professionally. I'm stoked with the signings and depth the Tigers have for next season, they really have looked to have made some 'smart purchases', with some experience and youth among the forwards and backs and really do look to have one of the strongest playing rosters assembled.

Definitely the best roster we have ever had and as KS said can't wait to see how this jigsaw puzzle works

Let's hope the puzzle comes together quickly Hard run early could put us in the negatives very quickly

I'm glad to have him, cant help but think however that he will see more time in the forwards than the backs.

Really looking forward to the trials, let hope we really see some competition for spots next year - that's something we really have never had before (or at least in so many positions).

Reddy is a good signing,he would suit us at fullback,he can catch as good as any,he can tackle better than any fullback we have ever had,and he runs hard,a sure bet in my book, plus if we lose a centre he can cover no worries.

Give it up will you. Morris was and is a very good footballer. He was played out of position by Sheens. Great defender and club man.
