John Cartwright has quit as the coach of the Gold Coast Titans.
The club will hold a press conference at 4pm on Tuesday.
The 48-year-old was appointed coach at the Queensland club in 2007 after a successful playing career with Penrith, where he was part of the premiership-winning 1991 side. He was an assistant coach at the Roosters between 2002 and 2005 following a stint in the same role at the Panthers.
Cartwright is halfway into a five-year contract but has been under increasing pressure following continued poor performances. The former representative forward is the inaugural and only coach of the Titans since the latest Gold Coast franchise entered the NRL but is poised to be replaced, most likely by assistant Neil Henry.
There was increased speculation after management recently commissioned a total review of the club. That it coincided with the availability of Wayne Bennett, who subsequently signed with Brisbane, suggested a change of coach was likely. The Gold Coast's perilous financial situation has been well documented, which could make settling on a payout figure - and affording a replacement - a difficult task.
The Titans currently sit 13th on the NRL ladder and have not made the finals since 2010 despite a roster boasting the likes of Greg Bird, Nate Myles and the promising halves combination of Aidan Sezer and Albert Kelly. The Titans lost 28-8 to the Cowboys on Saturday in what would now appear to be the final straw for Cartwright.
