For better or worse, he didn't get promoted to NRL.
Say what you want about Gus but at Roosters he was the coaching director and he had clearly, Stuart, flanagan, AOB and Holbrook and maybe a couple of others that are skipping my mind.
Sheens has also produced a good lineage of coaches but Gus has produced the more recent, relevant ones.
But it's not about Gus or any one person..coaches need coaching too.

In all honesty I think Flanagan is a shoe in for the assistant role.
This club always has a knee jerk response to media pressure and there’s been no shortage of media support for Flanagan.
Add in the narrative that Benji isn’t surrounded by experience, Flanagan’s ties to Moses and the fact he’s a former Magpies player and I’d say it’s a done deal.
I think it’s the wrong choice btw. Moses will undermine Benji and the club will tear itself apart again but that’s honestly the level of strategic ability displayed by those running the club.
Benji needs technical and tactical support more than anything. Yes experience would help but a defensive coach that can put together an effective defensive system and focus on the details.
Benji doesn’t strike me as someone who thinks about processes and systems all that much or as someone that’s detail oriented.

Long shot but even if he did his specialty is attack strategy and we’ve already got Benji and Hodgo for that ( and look at the points we've scored and our hot attacking structures ! ).
