Just a theory

G'day guys, just a theory and i wanted to see what you all thought. Just to start out im a huge fan of Benji's when he arrived on the seen the guy was what we needed at that time a hopping speedster who played by pure instinct, that was then this is now, now he is a leader. Last night he did'nt seem committed or to care to much, perhaps he was injured but still he is a leader in our squad and has to accept responsability. His form's been down a while in truth only cause he does'nt have a proper half back next to him. I read recently that the tigers were going to upgrade his contract to around a mil a year. I love the guy but in my opinion its madness.
There might be a way to help him. If the tigers allow him to test his value on the open market. It shows he isn't indispensable, and when we re sign him it will be to his true market value, no where near a mil a year. And that might just be the kick in the pant's he need's. I know im singling him out it's just at some point he has to step up, he is a leader in the team now and i don't see it. No one player is bigger than any club. Look at what Bennett did to Wally Lewis at Brisbane. Hopefully Marshall will re sign and be used as an example to other players, in that while you play, play, worry about being in front of the camera in retirement.

Your theory has merit but I doubt it would ever happen. The club is committed to Benji.

Is Benji committed to the team? Yes, I believe so. I also believe he did the worst thing possible last night by coming back from injury early because on top of being down on form he could not play properly anyway. He did this to help the team but actually hindered it. Did he really think this through? He must have been banking on the best possible outcome and I don't think it was that he didn't care, more a reaction to how it had back-fired like it did.

And by making way for him we went into the game without the half-back the team had been training with, who also happened to be the kicker. To go into an NRL game in such a way was madness.

I have come to terms with the fact that the club will sign Benji again without him testing his true value. But what I would like to see is for the club and coach to stop giving him such importance within the team structures.

I wouldn't be against it either mate. He does need something to shake him out of this rut he has gotten himself in. I thought losing the Kiwi captaincy would've done the job but no it hasn't. By the time his current contract ends, I don't believe he's indispensable to us given Brooks and Moses and their rising reputations. Importantly too, sometimes it's about what's best for both parties. Is Marshall a little jaded?? Does he need to just explore that avenue of change?? Do WT's want to keep both Moses and Brooks?? What's best for the club and Benji??

Has anyone noticed whenever Benji's off contract, theres never any NRL club chasing him,it's Japanese Rugby etc. Not like JT, Cronk and even Robbie. I think it shows how valuable the rest of the comp see him as. Just an observation I think we should make before throwing millions at him. And I'm not just basing this on last nights effort.

He'd easily get the money were giving him from another NRL team. Its ridiculous to suggest otherwise. When was the last time he was in the last year of his contract anyway? His current one has two years left and I'm sure the last time he upgraded it was midterm of his contract aswell.

He could have a reemergence, lots of support at the tigers to let him go 06-09 but he came good yeah? Never know, once brooks starts a combo with him he might become unstopable! but definitely dont upgrade his contract, if we do that I think we can pop the champagne as we will have won the award for worst managed club! :righton:

What i cant understand is…...does not having a halfback with him make him throw passes over the sideline, make numerous poor decisions like kicking on 2nd tackle, make deliberate poor decisions in defence to avoid contact?????????????????????? He's the modern day Craig Field.

There were rumors about warriors wanting him desperately, and they have $$$ to spend.
Risky move

What im curious to know is how much he will be on when we re sign him and if any other club would pay him as much?

in a way yes, because the half back would do all that instead, if he does it well we do well, if he does it poorly he gets dropped and benji forced to do it instead.

We need a brooks like player to take the long kicks and let benji chime in when he sees an opportunity to put someone through a hole. Anasta was doing alright at that, he has a solid long kicking game and has a go defensively too.

All valid and good points, i can only assume the question must be if its a mental problem e.g lacking confidence, or a problem with his work ethic on the park. On his day he's as good as anyone, i just think it's such a shame he could have become anything he had / has huge potential, personally i think he has been side tracked with too many other commitment's outside of football, i'd love Benji to retire with us but not at all cost's.

I dont think he would, he'd know we have to pay overs for elite players, including him…its no different

He might have had interest years ago, not now hes sliding south fast

His marketability would reduce drastically if he moved to another club.....even NZ imo....the loyalty BS that goes with it all

This was my prediction pre season in another thread, a mid season transfer and the Warriors go on to win the comp!
