Kassidy Grant

The article doesn't say much.

Seems like just that the NRL went around asking clubs about the women involved in their staff and we nominated her.

I'm not trying to have a go at her at all, and I understand she has done a Masters degree but she's 25yo and has worked here for 4 years (3 of them wooden spoon year)- This would've been her first or maybe second full time job.. it all seems so inexperienced in the coaching room.

someone changed the formulas in her spreadsheet this week

The article is both interesting and scary. If she has all this data, and is feeding it to Benji realtime during matches, why are our substitutions so terrible? Players kept on the field when they're exhausted?
Benji can watch one clip and come up with a game plan? I don't think I've seen one game where it looked like we had a game plan that our boys were executing. It's all just random ad-hoc chaos when we have the ball, and up to individuals to create something. It's not like we change our approach from week to week. We lose the ruck every week, we are on the back foot constantly, we get exposed by our opponents every week. Sometimes our scramble is good enough to put other teams off. If it's not we lose.
Tactically we are the weakest team in the comp. If we have all this data I'd hope we were using it to come up with ways to win more matches, but it seems like we're either ignoring the data, or the plans can't be communicated by our coaches or the players don't have the talent to execute it.

You always find that silver lining.

Remember: Sabermetrics (aka Moneyball) is about finding hidden value in player recruitment. It's not about how to play baseball (or Rugby League) or a method to win games. If Cassidy is on that recruitment value track, that's great to hear. Go and find em!

However, good luck trying to come up with an empirical, logical way to win Rugby League games that either stacks up mathematically or can be passed on to a whole team. Read up on Charles Reep if you want to know why England's national football team were so bad for so long. Football and Rugby league are non-linear systems, and that makes modelling extremely problematic.

In rugby league's case, beyond from noisy data and rule changes --- you're going to have to deal with unpredictable human behaviour, weather, refereeing decisions, injuries, and errors. Again, good luck with that one.

Well, it seems to me that overall, shes nailed a few good targets per recruitments:

Skels, Hunt, Turuva, Bird, May etc, weve got room in the roster and some us estimating anothef $1.4m at least to pump into the side.

Plus shes loyal.

I dont give a tinkers cuss what she actually looks like.

And its not her job to coach, but a bright young person like thaf, maybe she should get her ticket.

What if there is none?

What value is she bringing other then eye candy for punters?

Either she's not qualified for her role, get insights are wrong, or Benji is taking the data and acting incorrectly.

As tigers said Moneyball is about recruitment and finding the right players for the right price. What other metrics us she reporting on? How does this data get used, by whom?

Given our results since she's been at the club, and the fact she was hired with zero experience, is she providing us with what we need?

Ah, now we know how Seyfarth and Twal were recruited. I still disagree with Sunday’s commentator saying “Twal can be very dangerous this close to the line.”

I love it when they are 5 m out attacking the opponents line, Twal manages to get the ball in his hands on the last play at least once a game …

He needs to be standing on the 20 on the last just to remove any possibility of him touching the ball in that situation

Does he have any idea where the back fence is at some stage earlier on in the tackle count instead of catching the ball (on a good day) standing still?

Our trajectory has been very good this year considering we have won 3 wooden spoons. Last Sunday was disappointing as we have always been competitive this year. The improvements in the roster has been good and with Richardson as CEO I believe this will continue when our new signings are announced. RIchardson confirmed we have money to spend which impacts the current roster in that there are gaps in the squad and no doubt performance is impacted.

Performance analyst Kassidy Grant is using her ‘maths obsession’ and passion for data to drive Benji Marshall’s on-field success

So she's admitting she's completely shit at her job.
