Lovett guided by experienced teammates
Promising Wests Tigers back rower Kyle Lovett is eager to learn from the group of experienced forwards at the Club as he pushes for an NRL debut in 2014.
During a successful 2013 season, Lovett played for the NSW Under 20s Origin team, stepped up into the NSW Cup side during various games and captained the Wests Tigers Holden Cup team.
Now the Leichhardt junior is preparing for his first season with the full time squad and says advice from experienced back rowers Dene Halatau, Liam Fulton and Cory Paterson has been extremely helpful.
“They are all good blokes and really easy to speak to,” Lovett said. “If we ever need anything, us young blokes, they help us out and have been really good."
While Halatau and Paterson are new additions for 2014, Fulton has played a key role in moulding Lovett’s game during his two seasons with the Holden Cup side.
“Fulton has been helping me a lot and giving me little tips,” Lovett said.
“Over the last few years I have been watching him really closely, he is such a workhorse and does the little things that not many people notice.
“I look up to him as a player and to have a few older guys back there’s a lot experience at the Club so that definitely helps.”
Another added avenue for Lovett comes from the coaching staff, with former New Zealand International forward David Kidwell an Assistant Coach for 2014.
“Kidwell is really good, he knows his stuff,” Lovett said. “He was a great back rower and I’m looking forward to learning from him.”
Drawing comparisons to a well-drilled army soldier both on and off the field, Lovett has earned the nickname ‘Sarge’ amongst his teammates.
“It actually happened when I was in the Under 16s Origin team, one of the guys from the Bulldogs, David Minute gave me the nickname,” Lovett said.
“My haircut is usually short and sharp; I’m sometimes a bit serious too so that’s what earned me that nickname I think.”
It’s that serious attitude that Wests Tigers prop Aaron Woods believes will help Lovett eventually reach his goal of an NRL debut.
“I’ve watched him since juniors when he was playing for Five Dock (RSL), he was always one of the better players in his team,” Woods said.
“Kyle has really good work ethic that I think will help him go the full way.”
For now though, Lovett is focused on a tough pre-season and working on improving key areas in preparation for 2014.
“It has been real hard training so far but I’ve really enjoyed it,” Lovett said.
“I want to work on my speed, because I’ve put on a few kilos while working on my strength.
“It’s been a good step up, that extra level of professionalism in the top grade.”
