Luai and the drop out kick

Apologies if it has been covered already, but when it comes to drop out kicks, I am not sure why he pushes the envelope as much as he does. Ultimately it is a risky play, if not timed perfectly.

If it is a ploy to slow the play down / organize the defence, then I don't know what an extra second makes a difference?

He's done it a couple of times, and I also don't know how prevalent this has been in other games. None in the others I've watched, are there stats available?

The big boys who have just defended their line for however long would appreciate every second.

What are the rules of today
Kicker
1. No penalty if the ball doesn’t pass the 10 metre line.
2. If the ball is kicked out over the sideline (this is where it gets interesting) no penalty
UNLESS
it’s kicked out ( into the crowd)and the referee rules that the receiving team didn’t get the opportunity to touch the ball 🤷‍♂️ it’s a penalty.
3. If the drop out doesn’t go 10 metres and the kicking team touch the ball (NO PENALTY)
If the receiving team touch the ball
(PENALTY)

Go back to all of rules that were in place before they stupidly changed them.
Kicker
1. Ball has to travel over the 10 metre line.
2. Can’t go out on the full
Both teams
1. Can’t touch the ball until it’s past over the 10 metre line.

There was one game last round where it was an automatic sin bin for a repeated infringement (2nd time ) from a scrum....where inthink they can take a penalty or pack a scrum again.
Forget the game bloke was offside again and went straight to the bin

I’m a bit old school
Kick the ball down field 60 mtr and the whole team should be sprinting upfield to defend , keep the opposition down their end they can’t score , the short drop out for me dumps you under to much pressure and most of these kicks stuff up , I’m not a fan
The NRL has given them the incentive by not penalising them if the kick doesn’t go the 10. The NRL don’t want the contact of players running 30m into a set defensive line. It’s why the kick offs will eventually be tweaked as well. Something like 7 tackle sets for teams who can regather their own kick off.

We got pinged on the exact second, yet the game before I watched the clock run down and the buzzer didnt sound at all, kick was a bout 2 seconds after the clock hit zero.

Theyve buggered round with this rule so much I never know what happens
True, I've noticed that too.

Gets me thinking about these short drop outs, personally I'm not a fan, just kick the shit out of the ball and chase like crazy.

I still think it should be a reward for an attacking team to get the ball back and now under the current rules it only gives you a 50/50 chance of getting possession back if the defending team gets it right.

Yeah I get the arguments on both sides but I think they should bring the penalty back for an "incorrect restart" as they call it and maybe make the minimum distance 20 metres instead of 10.

Find it kind of funny how the Walker Brothers pioneered this in Queensland Cup and all the main stream NRL coaches seemed to poo poo the idea a few years ago and now everyone does it.

Those guys definitely ahead of their time, what a football family.

But it hasn’t stopped the possibility of big contact because you can still drop kick it 40-50 metres if they choose.
To eliminate big contact they would need to make it the ball has to go 10 metres but no further than the 20 metre line.
Seriously they should have left it how it always was.

They aren’t going to come out and make those rules. All they can do is give incentives for going short.

It was the Titans game .....Kelly went to the bin
