Lui looking forward to fatherhood

Wests Tigers halfback Robert Lui has left an off-season of drama behind and says welcoming a baby boy will be the perfect way to begin a new NRL campaign.

One of the finds of 2010, Lui is still facing a number of charges against his pregnant partner, Taleah Rae Backo.

But, after having his bail conditions changed late last year to allow contact with Backo, with the pair expecting a boy within the next month, the 21-year-old is optimistic about 2011.

"I'm looking forward to it," he told AAP from the club's Community Carnival rugby league clinic at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Tuesday.

"(The baby's) going to be something different in three weeks' time but I can't wait.

"It's going to be a good way to start the season."

Lui helped the Tigers to third on the NRL ladder in 2010 with some sparkling form that, at the time, he also put down to impending fatherhood.

"Last year I said I'm having a baby so I want to go better in my footy career and that's what I want to do this year," he said.

"It's a bigger responsibility being a father.

"I've talked to guys like Toddy Payten and Gareth Ellis and Bryce Gibbs because they've all got little kids and they've helped me heaps."

**Lui had faced nine charges, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, choking and aggravated robbery, but the most serious have been withdrawn ahead of his next appearance in court on April 13.**

He turned himself in to police last September after the Tigers were knocked out of the NRL finals in the second last week by eventual premiers St George Illawarra and was stood down by his club.

He returned to training in November after his bail conditions were changed and was then named in Queensland's emerging State of Origin squad the following month.

His focus now will be on building a lethal combination with Golden Boot winner Benji Marshall.

"We've had a chat about the key positions," Lui said.

"(Coach Tim Sheens) just wants me tobuild on what I did last year.

"I've grown in confidence and I've grown better along with the boys, knowing my role with the team and with Benji and (hooker) Robbie (Farah).

"We'll be more hungry to go one better and we're just going to go hard from round one.

"We finally got back into the finals (for the first time since 2005) and expectation now from everyone is to go one better.

"From ourselves, we know we can go one better."

Good news. Sounds like he & his family have reconciled.

There was a Good reason for Sam Backo to come to town last week and play in the Origin Legends :supporter:

Almost sounds like he has the 7 sown up from the way he is talking at the end there. Moltz in fullback again?

Hope he stays @ the club for his entire career,
big wraps on the kid.

Congrats on the baby, Lui…
Looking forward to a big successful season.

Shot!

Promising signs and it's going to be one hell of a battle to decide the Tigers number 7 this year. Many of us are excited at seeing the return of Moltzen, and rightly so, but young Lui also finished the season well and played pretty solid during the finals series.

well that's all good news, I think I would still prefer Moltzen at half, but with the way Lui played, especially at the end of last year, it's a hard call.

News Flash - he's still facing a raft of charges for a number of offences. he should keep his trap shut and let justice run its course before running out these "good news" stories

Most people are innocent and honest enough to answer a question when they are asked.

I'm Sure Rob Lui (Only just turned 21) wouldn't be actively chasing these types of articles and all would be cleared via the Club and the powers that be.

for me positive PR can only be helpful for the player, the Tigers and the NRL.

The charges he faces are not season nor contract ending stuff..The club has it covered..What would you rather he had said Alf? " I am not looking at the season nor any position for this matter because i will be in jail for a chunk of it" 😕 😕
Get on his side, not against him because this kid will set the NRL on fire in 2011

He shouldn't be talking to the media full stop. And shame on you for trivialising domestic violence "not season nor contract ending stuff" indeed

Easy Alf

No ones trivialising domestic violence.

People make Big and Little mistakes and learn from them every day. Some us are lucky enough not to have em in the papers.

PS - I am active in counselling and supporting people in the real world and there a lot worse stuff out there, People need support as there isnt a manual to this thing we call life.

Take i chill pill ALF no one is making light of domestic violience at all. sure everyone has a right od opinion but please get of your soapbox mate. whats he suppossed to do. if he says nothing the club would be unhappy and as others have said it was probably the club that wanted the article done

I agree with Alf. He should be declining interviews with the media and simply put his head down, train hard and resolve off field issues.

Im sure he is getting advice from somewhere saying "Yes" do the interviews etc…

It goes without saying that Lui would only be speaking to the media with permission from Tigers management, and only certain questions/answers would be allowed for print media. For those who are blowing up over the media article, give the Tigers a call to voice your displeasure if it bothers you so much, they may just take it on board for next time.

Hi Alf..You must be new on here?
Some people om here cant help themselves returning serve so its amusing at times.
They dont realise its a free world here in Australia. And EVERYONE has an opinion and is free to express it.
tHERES no need to for some of you "know it alls" to even reply. So let Alf have his say for gods sake without giving your opinions

As you say tcogger, everyone has an opinion and is free to express it, no point promoting this and then contradicting yourself by telling others not to give their opinion on such a debated topic. No one on here has stopped Alf from having his reply as he is entitled to.

The off-field dramas surrounding young Rob Lui has certainly generated media interest both he and the Wests Tigers could do without, and it has definitely created it's fair share of debate on here as we all know. Having said that, not everyone agrees on the position taken by the Tigers, but that's not up to us to decide. If they allow Lui to have media contact, so be it. All we are merely doing here is discussing the issue and keeping our fingers crossed that Rob Lui comes out of it a better person and can continue to play for the Wests Tigers - This season and beyond.
