I thought he might do okay as a number 9, but to be honest he has looked horrible there aswell.

That example is so irrelevant. It’s sport. It’s happened for 100 years. A player stops performing in his team. New team, new environment and new coach thinks he can get the best out of player x. It’s really not that hard.
