Equal second in 2021 for try assists

Genuine question, has he actually put anyone over for a try close to the line with a nice pass? They've all been off kicks or he's made a line break after someone else put him in space. Not saying that's bad I'm glad he's getting try assists but we haven't seen that nice short passing game close to the line he's got.

I must have missed it? Who was running hard through a hole or running hard on a good line?

Hes had Luciano and now Garner next to him as well as Joey Leilua and talau, all try scorers. Garner has scored a few of Doueihi and almost scored off Simpkin on Sunday too. Laurie has made heaps of line breaks too yet somehow Brooks isn't putting people through holes. Hopefully this weekend against a weak titans defence he can put someone into some space

Ok, you make a good point, he could show a little more enthusiasm to influence the players around him. The lack of teamwork in previous games rests on his shoulders as well. Let’s see how he goes as we watch this new found teamwork marinate for a while?

I'm also happy if he does just keep playing that first receiver role and digging into the line and distributing out wide because it can be effective, and when we played with some depth and he did it, it worked well. If he does want to do that he needs to ice those attacking situations after line breaks etc though and stop dummying and running back to the middle of the field

Hopefully Garner stays on the left and we see that combo with him and Brooks come back because it was very effective. I liked when he linked up with Laurie too, we looked so much better in that second half when brooks, Doueihi and Laurie all played together.

That’s true, and it’s a good improvement. But let’s remember last year when he had 3 and Benji had 20, many said try assists were a stat that didn’t really matter..

It also shows that Brooks is performing now. The criticism of him is over the top.

We've also apparently spent the second most time of any team in the opponent's attacking 20 but have a meagre amount of points to show for it.

So you could argue he should have many more try assists.

Stats don't tell the whole story. Let's not pretend Brooks is having a good season. He's been average so far. Not the best, not the worst and disappointing given his experience.

Message to Luke Brooks from Sunday,

If nothing is doing.... Punch a grubber into the in goal and force the opposition into a scramble or get a repeat set.

Too many times we were meager in attack and let the Dragons off.

No, some of the criticism is warranted. Try assists are good but that doesn't mean he is being the controlling, game managing halfback he claimed to be.

He's done some good things this year and he's done some bad things this year, problem is a lot of people either say he played bad or good when it's not always that simple.

Blokes are obsessed with brooks renting free in their heads . It is okay to grind a win pull your 🔪 out after a loss.

He’s playing exactly the way the coach wants him to. IE a first receiver that shovels the ball on

Let Doohey and Laurie do all the flashy stuff

I don’t know how it isn’t obvious to some people

I think Madge put a target on Brooksy when he was given charge of lining up the ducks. It takes the heat off Doueihi and Laurie to some extent.

I watched the replay again yesterday. I thought he went ok in the second half. Some very good short kicks (although his longer kicking game is still crap). There were a couple of occasions where the attack really gelled with short interchange passing with changes of direction of several players. Looked fantastic. But this was infrequent.
His defence is first rate for a little guy and late in the game he did 'manage' the game OK with kicks to the corner making the Dragqueens work it out from deep in their 22. I don't think he's a 'heads up' half back. To paraphrase Sharon, "he is what he is" and he aint going to change at this stage of his career.
So the question for Madge is do we keep him or look for an alternative?
Step one in answering that question is on its way next year in the form of Hastings. No doubt he will get some chances in the seven jumper.
So we'll see how it pans out.
Brooks playing behind a pack that more than holds its own as it did on Sunday is OK. Behind a pack that is getting manhandled, he's terrible.

I think he’s been better than last year but hasn’t been overly impressive. He seems to kill the momentum when he gets it in the opposition 20. Maybe it’s how we play under Madge, I’m not sure, but he looked a much more dangerous player in years gone by.

Should not be taking long kicks at all... They're so delicate and simply glide into the opposition winger's arms giving them decent field position to start their sets. Should be using Doueihi's bombs more often

He's been a solid 7 out of 10 so far this year I think. Think a lot of it has to do with us not being deep enough in attack, when we got deeper and he went into the line and passes out to AD or Laurie it worked well.

It's the off the cuff stuff he's struggled with. We make a break and play the ball fast and he gets the ball and seems to take the wrong option a lot of the time. His long kicking is still average but don't think that's being fixed at this point, just let Doueihi do it.

I think he is about a 7 out of 10 as well which to me is pretty good for the level of player that Brooks is. This is why I think the criticism is over the top.

Sure he isn't a great player but if you are expecting that your expectations are out of line with reality.

He isn't creating a lot of stuff for us but his overall game has been good.

I see Luciano, Laurie and Doueihi as being the guys more likely to create something.

It'll be interesting how Simpkin comes on. I like him but he hasn't shown that extra level ability that great players have plus he has the hog play in him that Robbie had that cost us plenty of times.

We do need a star player or two. Guys that can create something out of nothing and lift the team. I think lots of people are expecting Brooks to be that guy but he isn't.

That is my biggest gripe, along with numerous commentators this year, we have a glut of field possession on the opponents tryline, and come up with nothing, happens almost every week. And most weeks the opposition get the ball, go down our end and score first or second visit, and that contributes heaps to the players dropping their heads, they surely don't have confidence in Brooks to get it done

Brooks looks outside of him and it's skinny. Opposition teams have far greater strike out wide. Sunday was a great example. Brooks provides more than enough try scoring opps to defeat the Dragons.

Brooks looks outside him and realises he can’t throw a long ball so he either passes short to the next guy or turns a plodder back on the inside with a hospital pass / settler killing off another raid .
